Look to the East, Look to the West, the new album by Camera Obscura, is a revelation. The Tracyanne Campbell-led outfit, reuniting with producer Jari Haapalainen (Let’s Get Out of This Country, My Maudlin Career), have crafted an album that simultaneously recalls why longtime fans have ferociously loved them for decades while also being their most sophisticated effort to date. It is also the most hard-fought album of Camera Obscura’s career. Following the 2015 passing of founding keyboardist and friend Carey Lander (to whom the penultimate track “Sugar Almond” is addressed), the band went into an extended hiatus. They remained in contact, but their status was uncertain until they announced their return, having been invited to perform as part of Belle & Sebastian’s 2019 Boaty Weekender cruise festival, along with a pair of sold-out warm-up shows in Glasgow. Donna Maciocia (keys and vocals) joined founding members Kenny McKeeve (guitar and vocals), Gavin Dunbar (bass), and Lee Thomson (drums and percussion) for those shows and has since become a regular songwriting partner of Campbell’s. Recorded in the same room where Queen wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Look to the East, Look to the West feels big, a widescreen reframing of Camera Obscura’s sound that, paradoxically, saw the band go back to basics there are no string or brass arrangements, with more emphasis placed on piano, synthesizers, Hammond organ, and drum machines, and, perhaps most strikingly, the group have dropped the veil of reverb that characterized their previous albums. The tinges of country and soul that give Camera Obscura’s baroque take on pop music its bittersweet edge have never been more apparent guitars shimmer into the distance, keys haunt, and Campbell’s voice searches for the heart, reflecting on love, loss, and the passage of time. Lead single “Big Love” relishes in the space between country rock and prog, a pining break-up anthem featuring the soaring pedal steel of Tim Davidson. It’s a Nashville Sound heartbreaker, tackling the complexity of wanting to rekindle a bad relationship with Campbell’s uncanny ability to render the past: “It was a big love, she said / That’s why it took ten years to get her out of her head,” she begins. “We’re Going to Make It in a Man’s World” was co-written with Maciocia for filmmaker Margaret Salmon’s 2021 film Icarus (After Amelia). (Salmon, in turn, shot Look to the East, Look to the West’s cover photography featuring Fiona Morrison, who was on the cover of Camera Obscura’s debut, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi.). Ironic and sincere, the two navigate the reality of being women in the music industry, somehow floating over Davidson’s pedal steel and Maciocia’s keys. “The Light Nights” is a swooning song propelled by a western shuffle and killer guitar, striking a balance between a particularly good honky-tonk joint’s jukebox and a lost gem of California pop music waiting to be discovered in a 7” bin. Look to the East, Look to the West is the sound of a band that has grown more confident in its sound and purpose than ever. It is Camera Obscura at their best and most evocative, an album that completely rearranges the listener’s emotional core, leaving them sad and exhilarated at the same time. Camera Obscura’s catalog is replete with songs people point to as life-changing, songs that will stick with them all their lives. Look to the East, Look to the West has 11 of them; take your pick.

“async – immersion 2023″ is a sound installation that appeals to the eyes, ears, and nose. The sound of the album “async” released in 2017 by the late Professor Ryuichi Sakamoto will be experienced in a special multi-channel sound environment, and will be shown along with visuals and art by Shiro Takatani.

“In the wake of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s untimely death in March 2023, Shiro Takatani (member of the company Dumb Type, which has graced a number of Australian festivals) created a new version, async – immersion 2023, of his collaboration with Sakamoto. Specifically designed for the vast dark industrial basement of the Shinbun Kyoto building in this year’s Ambient Kyoto, and blending Sakamoto’s music in exquisite three-dimensional sound with Takatani’s seemingly endless sequence of images (including landscape, library, seascape, Sakamoto’s work tools and a piano wrecked by the 2011 tsunami, which reignited Sakamoto’s anti-nuclear activism) and their digital manipulation, this work exemplifies everything that a massive screen-based immersion can achieve: meditative, reflective, technically faultless. In the ninety minutes I spent there, only one image was repeated and then in different format: I could have stayed there all day.”

When Jellyfish released their second album, Spilt Milk, in February 1993, critics didn’t know what comparison to make of the band. The band had released their first album, Bellybutton, to rave reviews and even had a Top 40 hit with the catchy “Baby’s Coming Back,” which wasn’t even one of the better tracks. The melodies flowed, and the harmonies shook you down to your core.

The duo was celebrated for their defiance in the grunge era, crafting deliriously sunny pop jams. In a Newsweek feature highlighting the Best Summer Albums from 1985-1997, Zach Schonfeld wrote a blurb on Spilt Milk, saying, “God bless Jellyfish for releasing this lost power-pop masterwork at the height of the grunge explosion. With angst on the airwaves, Andy Sturmer and Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (with help from soon-to-be-star-producer Jon Brion) crafted 12 unfashionably sunny and remarkably well-built pop gems.

“It’s the colorfulness of it all that makes it such a great summer record; nods to peak Queen, 80s metal, and The Beatles at their sugariest abound, but Spilt Milk couldn’t have been made by anyone but Jellyfish. Shame they didn’t copyright the title ‘Bye Bye Bye’ before NSYNC nabbed it.”

The history of Spilt Milk is legendary in Jellyfish circles. When they began writing in 1992, Brian Wilson paid them a visit to the studio, having been impressed by their debut Bellybutton. The duo showed off their electric harpsichords and clavinet, which left Wilson unimpressed. He wanted to see something new. This sparked an idea in the duo.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Warp Records

Revanchist (2023) is the long-awaited debut album by Evian Christ, scheduled for release by WARP on 20th October 2023. The eight-track record explores the latent potential in Trance to evoke, beyond Euphoria, the fullest feeling of the Sublime. Revanchist draws from an unlikely and expansive pool of influences; compositing, at once, the suffocating throttle of Demiurge-era Emptyset (2011); the worldliness of Madonna and William Orbit’s Ray Of Light LP (1998); the acute uncanniness of Laibach’s Across The Universe (1988); and a highly stylized approach to mixing and sound design primarily inspired by Sasha’s seminal Xpander EP (1999).

On Embers, Revanchist’s opening track and lead single, perhaps best encapsulates Christ’s inclination towards the total annihilation of Trance’s default affects; rapturous supersaws meet a tempest of indecipherable noise, mangled 808s and broken shards of Defected Records gospel house acapellas. Nobody Else shows reverence to classic Balearic Trance and its associated imagery — a widescreen view of a supermassive Iberian sunset; Apocalypse Now meets Café Del Mar. Its spacious breakdown, featuring an impressionistic treatment of vocals lifted from Clairo’s North, provides one of Revanchist’s most strikingly fragile moments. Yxguden, the record’s final single, is accompanied by a music video directed by early computer graphics pioneer and Tiesto-collaborator Micha Klein, who choreographs a meeting between Drain Gang’s Bladee and a Nordic Bronze Age cave drawing of an axe-wielding Moundperson. Utilising a vocal hook most widely recognised for its use in DJ Hixxy’s “More and More” (2007), Yxguden’s chaotic arrangement jump-cuts between moments of gauzy ambiance and frenzied exhilaration. Run Boys Run, Revanchist’s concluding track, sees Christ summon an enraptured chorus of bending strings and soaring choral threnoi, eventually resting on a single sub-bass note, held to exhaustion

Revanchist’s album artwork, designed by David Rudnick, features a hand-drawn depiction of a crystal-forged newborn, emerging against a backdrop compositing Lars Hertervig’s Gamle Furutrær (1865) and a still from Chris Bucklow’s Jerusalem (1994). The album was mixed and mastered by Chris Pawlusek and Christ in Goa, India.

Although Twisted Sister’s final studio album wasn’t as commercially successful as its predecessors, it is still Twisted in every way and a great record. The album was supposed to be a Dee Snider solo record, but Atlantic forced Dee’s hand and had the album released under the Twisted Sister name. Apparently, Dee Snider’s Twisted Sister band mates didn’t actually play on the album. “Love Is For Suckers” was put together by Snider, Ronni Le Tekro (guitarist for TNT), Reb Beach (the soon to be guitarist for Winger), and producer Beau Hill. But since Dee Snider wrote all of Twisted Sister’s material, the songwriting style on “Love Is For Suckers” wasn’t a far cry from Twisted Sister’s previous work.

Natalie Maines has had it up to here and isn’t going to take it anymore. “You’re only as sick as your secrets, so I’m telling everything,” she sings on “Sleep at Night” from Gaslighter, her fifth album with The Chicks. (The band dropped “Dixie” in the midst of 2020’s global protests over racial injustices.) Coming on the heels of what was apparently a very ugly split from actor Adrian Pasdar, the album is laden with eviscerating, nakedly honest lyrics. Maines has said the band was considering releasing a covers record, just to fulfill their contract with Sony, but that her divorce “sparked me being ready [to make new music].” The story kicks off with the album’s title track, an absolute delight—bright as the Southern California noontime sun—that paints her ex as a lie-lie-lie-liar. (The narrative only gets worse from there.) From the start, producer Jack Antonoff’s fingerprints are all over the songs, mostly for good. “Sleep At Night” (“My husband’s girlfriend’s husband just called me/ how messed up is that?”) is loaded with his signature Disney-like melodies, punchy percussion and Beach Boys ohhhhhs. In other words, it sounds like a song from his band fun., in the best way. So does the super-catchy “Texas Man”—all bounce and joy with staccato percussion and appealingly weird guitar flexes. Throughout, the Chicks sound as young and fresh as anything on pop radio: The spare piano ballad “Everybody Loves You” could’ve been recorded by Demi Lovato or Halsey, while the simple, reggae-kissed “Tights on My Boat” with its acoustic guitar and hints of violin is Ed Sheeran-esque. It also addresses the much-speculated-about innuendo from “Gaslighter,” on which Maines sings, “Boy, you know exactly what you did on my boat/ and boy, that’s exactly why you ain’t coming home” Here, she lobs the line: “You can tell the girl who left her tights on my boat that she can have you now.” Is it a country record? Not particularly, and some fans might be irked that the band’s beloved harmonies are not as prominent as usual. (This is very much Natalie’s show, vocally and lyrically.) But the Chicks have always been comfortable as outsiders, and it’s hard to imagine another “country” band making a song as edgy as “March March,” which urgently references reproductive legislation, climate change and gun control. By the last three songs of the record, all ballads, Maines can see her way out of the tunnel. As strings tumble like creek water on “Young Man,” she reaches for her highest, purest register to seemingly encourage her son to “take the best parts” of his father and “leave the bad news behind”—”my blues aren’t your blues.” – Shelly Ridenour

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ third album for A&M continues their good-natured Southern chooglin’ with hints of a newfound mid-70s AM pop vibe. Although it was recorded in Nashville, The Car Over the Lake Album has a distinctly Californian vibe on several tracks, particularly those written and sung by drummer Larry Lee, whose contributions could ride along “Ventura Highway” with any of America’s recordings. Despite this warm Beach Boys influence, the album is still a Southern rocker, evident on “Keep on Churning,” “Leatherwood,” and the slightly goofy “Gypsy Forest.” The hard-rockin’ push of “If You Want to Get to Heaven” is nowhere to be found on this album, but the laid-back porch-sittin’ hum of “From Time to Time” and the spectacular “If I Only Knew” acts as an acceptable substitute.

When he recorded the 2018 album The Other, King Tuff’s Kyle Thomas had grown weary of the power pop-meets-punk sound of the band and the rock & roll party-guy persona he had crafted to go along with it. Instead, he started making music that was more introspective and darkly psychedelic. 2023’s Smalltown Stardust moves even further away from the King Tuff formula in many important ways. Swearing off his sneering vocal style in favor of a heartfelt croon and stashing his guitar away for the most part, Thomas created the album in tandem with housemate Sasami Ashworth. She has a hand in the songwriting and production as well as adding many of the keyboards and strings that add color to the songs. The pair cook up a sound that’s warm and comforting enough to perfectly capture the sense of nostalgia that imbues the lyrics and melodies. Thomas wrote the songs while thinking back to his days growing up, figuring things out, and making music with friends in Vermont, and the tenderness that comes through in his words and voice is immense. Maybe not what anyone might expect from Thomas in this guise, but he proves just as good at getting down to some serious emotions as he does rocking out. Ashworth’s help is invaluable; her backing vocals are one click past beautiful, the instrumentation she adds gives the record a widescreen beauty, and having her as a foil seems to have opened Thomas up to being completely vulnerable and free. The combination of talents works almost like a superpower that unlocks the best from each musician. While the album does have a few tracks with a little bit of the rock & roll spark one might associate with King Tuff — both “Portrait of God” and “Rock River” bounce along nicely and feature guitars more heavily — where the album really hits home is on the ballads. Songs like “How I Love” or “Pebbles in a Stream” are like beacons from a lonely heart, “Love Letters to Plants” conjures up the warped sweetness of late-’60s Beach Boys, the Baroque pop-leaning “Always Find Me” is almost painfully pretty, and “Tell Me” uses the very familiar Fleetwood Mac trope but manages to escape scorn by being wonderfully light and melodic. Thomas also dips into fairly traditional singer/songwriter territory on the story song “The Bandits of Blue Sky,” but he keeps it weird and wonderful with some oddball bass sounds, swooping synth strings, and Ashworth’s rich vocal harmonies. Basically, this new direction for King Tuff is a perfect left turn, pulled off with a maximum amount of feeling and imagination. Aided by Ashworth’s sure hand, the new leaf Thomas turns over here means that Smalltown Stardust is just as good a mellow, meaningful King Tuff album as Was Dead is a rollicking, down-and-dirty rock record. Which is to say, really, really good indeed. – Tim Sendra
