New 2024 studio album from The Call. The Call recorded “Beaten at Your Own Game,” “Can’t Find Love,” and “Christine” ca. 1978-1980, during a time in which the band called themselves Airtight and, later, Motion Pictures, and before the band cut their first deal with Polygram. “Welcome to My World” is an outtake from 1986’s Into the Woods sessions.
The band submitted the demo “Right Between the Eyes” for the soundtrack of the 1991 motion picture Point Break. The remaining six songs are ca. 1991-1993 after The Call recorded the Live under the Red Moon album (1990). “A Beautiful Lie” features Garth Hudson of The Band along with Danny Timms and the late Tommy Spurlock.
Nearly lost to the sands of time, all of these songs remained unfinished until Jim Goodwin, Tom Ferrier, Scott Musick, and Ralph Patlan returned to the studio in 2023 to add missing tracks. These fully completed versions of previously unreleased songs that you now hold in your hands feature Michael Been’s original lead vocals.

The genre of the mélodie accompanied Fauré like a kind of personal journal. This music voluptuously – and sometimes vehemently – encompasses the meanderings of the soul: dreams, nostalgia, reflections or mirages . . . Stéphane Degout and Alain Planès take advantage of the iridescent tones of an 1892 Pleyel in their interpretation of some of his finest song cycles, including the testamentary L’Horizon chimérique.

Sylvius Leopold Weiss was born in the then Bohemian province of Silesia (now in Poland) in 1687 and grew up under the strong influence of Losy, which can be seen clearly in his early compositions. After his Italian sojourn (1710-14), Weiss became deeply involved with the Prague musical milieu and, according to numerous documents, he must have spent much time there even after he was invited by Augustus the Strong, on the 23rd of August 1718, to become an “Electoral Saxon and Royal Polish Chamber Musician” at his court in Dresden. In the years between 1717 and 1724 he worked closely with Johann Christian Anthoni von Adlersfeld at the Prague Music Academy to create one of most extensive collections of his music ever assembled, what we now know as the “London Manuscript.” Also, in this period he worked with the Prague lute maker Thomas Edlinger to improve upon the 11-course instrument normally used by adding two bass courses to extend its range. Two different solutions were possible: using thicker or slightly longer strings. The thicker strings didn’t sound very good, so the extra length was decided upon. The added bass courses were placed on a new-fangled contraption attached to the side of the pegbox, called a “bass-rider.” This is the kind of lute I play for this recording.

Paganini’s string quartets with guitar are amongst his very finest chamber compositions. Written for friends and private performances they reveal the care he took in their construction. The dialogues in Quartet No. 6 are conversational but Nos. 11 and 13 are more advanced – here formal ingenuity and melodic creativity are fused with great character. Paganini’s feel for aria-like lyricism, for operatic richness, conveyed with a variety of musical ideas, is at its zenith in these works.
