The 20th-century Lithuanian composer’s dialogue between modern forms of expression and folk motifs is well represented in the four works in this recording. There is a sense of playful lightness in the Romantic aesthetic of Gruodis’s work, while Banaitis incorporates national lyricism with personal grief in his Sonata. Composed under the restrictions imposed by Soviet occupation, Vainiūnas’s Sonata Op. 38 is suffused with tragedy and sorrow, while the distinctive style of Juzeliūnas had an enormous impact on the future of Lithuanian music. All of these pieces are symbolic of survival and represent being truthful to one’s creative identity while under the harshest of conditions.

„When we walked out on stage it felt like a homecoming,” says Jakob Bro of this texturally spacious and emotionally charged live recording from Copenhagen, on which three of the defining protagonists of improvisation in Denmark, leading musicians from three generations of Danish jazz, come together. The concert, in February 2023, was particularly poignant since it marked a return to performance for trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg, who delivers some of his most thoughtful playing here. Repertoire, drawn from Jakob Bro’s Returnings and Gefion albums, is addressed in spontaneous and exploratory spirit, and transformed as Marilyn Mazur’s subtle percussion language of blossoming gongs and metals and rumbling drums blends with Bro’s drifting and rippling washes of sound. The music’s atmospheric qualities, as well its eruptive moments, are enhanced by the resonant acoustics of the Danish Radio Concert Hall.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary Edition of Olafur Arnalds For Now I Am Winter, the album has been remastered.

Icelander Ólafur Arnalds has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most brilliant and accomplished young composers over the course of a few years. He is an artist who combines a neo-classical style with a variety of influences ranging from electronica to minimalism.

Since Arnalds made his debut in 2007 with “Eulogy For Evolution”, the 26-year-old has realised a number of very different projects under his own name. These range from his own musical releases to soundtracks for highly successful Hollywood productions (“Looper”, “The Hunger Games”) and ballet music (“Dyad 1909”). On tours through Europe, North America and China, Arnalds has also presented his music very impressively in concerts and gained a large fan base within a very short time.

With “For Now I Am Winter”, Olafur Arnalds now presents his third studio album. His musical ideas here are poppier than ever before and in Arnór Dan Arnarson, the lead singer of the band Agent Fresco, Anrnalds has found a musical partner who fits in wonderfully with his extravagant compositions, creating lyrical, electronic pop anthems.

Twospeak are band leader and saxophonist Ronan Perrett’s bold and dynamic four-piece that draw inspiration equally from the world of contemporary jazz, bands like The Bad Plus and ADHD, the early 1970’s Canterbury Scene of Soft Machine and Caravan, Hot Rats-era Zappa and Deerhoof-esque indie rock, putting this all together in a heady brew and sounding uniquely themselves. Twospeak’s name is derived from the balancing act between words used to get through day-to-day life and the language of emotion, mood and storytelling humans have been expressing through music for thousands of years. That delicate balancing act is reflected in the distinctive music the group make.

While Joseph Haydn is quite rightly regarded as the most important co-inventor of genres such as the symphony, the string quartet and the piano trio in the form in which they have been handed down since the middle of the 18th century, the instrumental concerts are somewhat different. They primarily served the purpose of giving the individually outstanding members of the Esterházy court orchestra the opportunity to perform as soloists. Nevertheless, one can always appreciate their quality and, upon closer listening, discover a variety of beautiful things in them. Developed from the tradition of the Baroque concerti grossi, Haydn probably created a total of about 40 solo concertos, probably four of them for violin.

Thomas Albertus Irnberger from Salzburg is one of Austria’s leading violinists. He devotes himself with great passion and meticulousness to the classical-romantic repertoire on the one hand and to the exploration and rediscovery of “ostracized composers” on the other.

The Sonic Brewery follow up! Their second album “Can’t Kill Rock’n’Roll” also combines blues rock with hard rock and psychedelic elements

founded in 2017 by Benno Olbrich (vocals), Jonathan Niederer (guitar), Andreas Aigner (bass) and Thomas Hamberger (drums) in Eggenfelden, Lower Bavaria, the quartet made an immediate impression with their debut “Catch The Magic”. From groovy, tight riffs to psychedelic passages and brute outbursts. A sound deeply rooted in 70’s rock, but by no means backward-looking, but modern and full of energy. This is the best way to describe the band in a few words.

However, the true energy can only be felt at their live shows, which are gripping in a way that is not often experienced these days. The band manages to captivate the audience with ease and never lets go for a second. They have already been able to prove their outstanding live quality several times by performing as support acts for The Whiskey Foundation, DeWolff and Joanne Shaw Taylor.

It is one of the magical abilities of musical sounds that they create the most intense “present” and a vital “now!” Therefore, in these TIME TRAVELS, past epochs can be brought into the 21st century and temporal dimensions can experience a sensual vivification: Exactly 400 years before this CD recording, William Byrd (1543–1623) died and is brought back to life here with the magnificent THE BELLS. BRANDENBURGER REMIXED was composed as a tribute to the 300th anniversary of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, whose legendary virtuoso trumpet part is still an outstanding benchmark for all trumpet soloists today. – The saxophone concerto SIDDHARTA was composed in 2021 to mark the centenary of the first edition of Hermann Hesse’s novel, acclaimed by millions, in which Hesse so unprecedentedly aptly described a living Buddha who takes us back some 2500 years into the past. – Finally, SILK ROAD refers to Marco Polo, probably the most prominent explorer, who died exactly 700 years ago in January 1324 in his birthplace Venice. So let’s bring back all these places and times with the colourful sound world of these TIME TRAVELS to experience them all over again.
