Producer Creed Taylor has inspired everything from praise to anger among jazz fans. His work has been brilliant at times, detrimental at others (his worst flaw being a tendency to overproduce). Taylor plays a mostly positive role on La Cuna, a jazz-oriented effort uniting Ray Barretto with such first-class talent as Tito Puente (timbales) and the late Joe Farrell (tenor & soprano sax, flute). As slick as things get at times on La Cuna, Taylor wisely gives the players room to blow on everything from the haunting “Doloroso” and the driving “Cocinando” (a piece by Carlos Franzetti that shouldn’t be confused with Barretto’s major salsa/cha-cha hit) to a somewhat Gato Barbieri-ish take on Mussorgsky’s “The Old Castle.” Barretto successfully moves into soul territory on Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise” (which rapper Coolio recast as his hit “Gangsta’s Paradise” in 1994). Barretto may hate the term “Latin jazz,” but make no mistake: La Cuna is one of his most memorable contributions to that genre.

Sonny Stitt could rip through an up-tempo bebop stanza, then turn around and play a shivering, captivating ballad. He was a virtuoso on the horn and relished competition on the bandstand. Stitt had the qualities essential to a tenor battler; he was implacable, indefatigable, and inventive. Equipped with magnificent technique and iron chops, and gifted with an innate ability to swing, he could turn on the music seemingly at will. Stitt was highly admired by both fans and musicians.

In his “meeting” with Sadik Hakim, Stitt splits his time evenly between alto and tenor. With bassist Buster Williams and drummer J.R. Mitchell completing the quartet, Stitt is in his usual fine form on five veteran standards, a pair of blues-based originals and Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.” Highly recommended for bop fans.

Rikas were founded in 2016 in Stuttgart. Music has always been done by the four gold-throats and heartbreakers. They have known each other since childhood, playing in the school band at the age of 13, 14, and then on the streets of their hometown. After leaving school, I started walking: two summers criss-crossing Europe. Zurich, Milan, Nice, London, Paris. With songs by Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and the Beatles in their luggage and a sign on the guitar case: “Schlafplatz gesucht!” A thrilling experience for the band. Her music came straight to her, the reactions even more urgent. The glow in the eyes of the people in front of them, the twitching in their legs … Since then they are addicted to it.

Briton Rex Orange County first became known to the general public after taking part in the track Tyler, The Creator “Boredom”. Tyler has a special love for artists who record non-standard, but very emotional music. He mixes jazz, soul, classical, baroque pop, hip-hop and electronica in his sound, so it is easier to classify it as an alternative to streaming platforms and publications. A pivotal album for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1989’s Mother’s Milk turned the tide and transformed the band from underground funk-rocking rappers to mainstream bad boys with seemingly very little effort. Mother’s Milk brought them to MTV, scored them a deal with Warner Bros., and let both frontman Anthony Kiedis and the ubiquitous Flea get back into a good groove following the death of co-founding member Hillel Slovak. With a new lineup coalescing around the remaining duo plus new drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante, and with producer Michael Beinhorn again behind the boards, the band took everything that The Uplift Mofo Party Plan hinted at, and brought it fully to bear for this new venture. If anyone doubted the pulsating power of the opener, “Good Time Boys,” it took only a few bars of band’s outrageous and brilliant interpretation of the Stevie Wonder classic “Higher Ground” to prove that this new lineup was onto something special. Raspberries played their first show on October 16, 1970. Weekly gigs at the Agora in Cleveland created a groundswell of support for this new hot local band whose reputation as a live act was already becoming legendary, and before long they were attracting more than 1,000 people a night. Signed to Capitol Records by noted producer Jimmy Ienner in the winter of 1971, they completed their first album, Raspberries. To create excitement about this new band, Capitol employed a raspberry-scented scratch-and-sniff sticker affixed to the cover of their debut, the aroma of which exists to this day.

Released in early 1972, the album showcased the smash top 5 single, “Go All The Way”, which became a million-seller and Raspberries’ first gold record. Raspberries garnered rave notices from almost every music publication of the day with Rolling Stone providing their most impassioned review: “Raspberries opens with the finest burst of lightweight English rock I’’ve heard all year. The rest of the album is just as good.” Following the album’s release, Raspberries toured with the Grass Roots and the Hollies and appeared in front of over 50,000 fans at a major outdoor rock festival held at the Los Angeles Coliseum with such acts as Stevie Wonder, Sly & the Family Stone, the Bee Gees, the Eagles and Chuck Berry.
