The ingenious artist, Piazzolla who crossed borders to mesh musical style and culture, symbolizes the many values that Daniel Yvinec holds dear, and that are inherent to the artistic approach he has used with his ONJ since 2009. Piazzolla’s works are the perfect exploration playground for an orchestra accustomed to in-depth examination of sound, color, individual and group playing that advocates open jazz far from parochial and stylistic concerns.

Daniel Yvinec worked closely on the conception of this new repertoire with the brilliant musician and arranger, Gil Goldstein. Their work focuses on the melodies and rhythm developed throughout the Argentinean master’s works, as much as it does on Piazzolla’s bandoneon playing – the essential components that give this music its very special flavor. Piazzolla! by the ONJ celebrates the diversity of this music, offering a new and audacious reading full of surprise.

First heard on Xavi and Dusan’s inspired 2014 album, “Random Abstract” by XaDu, “Deep Ocean” starts things off with a fanfare of muscular guitar and cymbals crashing like waves on the rocky coast, carving out the beach and unearthing a primal groove with growling bass and jittering spectral figures. “The Sound of the Earth I” brings to mind David Sylvian’s post-Japan near ambient instrumental excursions where space and pause became as integral to the “composition as place” as his trusty Prophet 5. Once this world is created, and with a decidedly Beckian vibe (Jeff, that is), Dusan wrings from the neck of his guitar, some of the most emotive broken phrases and edited soulful voicings.

Twelve CD box set collection featuring all of Allan Holdsworth’s solo albums from 1982-2003. That title is no hyperbole-it was a proclamation that ran on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine in 2008, and is a feeling shared by fans and guitarists all around the world. Still, though, Holdsworth remains largely under-rated; many who admire his most famous work have overlooked dozens of fascinating finds to be made on his decades of recordings. This collection is a treasure trove of such discoveries, as it brings you all 11 of his albums as a solo artist, producer and group leader since 1980 plus the live-in-Tokyo album Then! And a 40-page booklet full of liner notes and archival photos. You also get previously unreleased bonus tracks, and all these albums have been newly remastered from the original tapes: I.O.U. (1982), Road Games (1983), Metal Fatigue (1985), Atavachron (1986), Sand (1987), Secrets (1989), Wardenclyffe Tower (1992), Hard Hat Area (1993), None Too Soon (1996), The Sixteen Men Of Tain (2000), Flat Tire (2001) and Then! Tenorist Harry Allen serves up a great French lullaby of his own – crafted together from the work of famous Parisian songwriters like Michel Legrand, Charles Trenet, and others – and delivered here in a small combo instrumental mode! The setting is great – as Allen’s deep tenor is balanced with the guitar of Jacob Fisher, which makes for a different presentation than a piano might have given the record – as Hans Beckenroth provides bass and Kristian Leth handles drums – all in a well-recorded ate that’s up to the standard that we’ve come to love from Venus Records. Titles include “I Will Wait For You”, “The Summer Knows”, “Chateau En Suede”, “I Wish You Love”, “My Way”, and “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life”. (more…)

Sophisticated Lady jazz quartet pays homage to the Great Tradition of American jazz but most of their repertoire is written by members of the quartet. Unlike the majority of contemporary jazz recordings, which are carefully and surgically perfected in postproduction, this album remains raw and fresh. These tracks are complete takes, “live to tape,” without editing.

Yarlung recorded this album directly to two tracks of RMGI 468 analog tape running at 15 ips, with no mixer.  We used the Hapi converter and Pyramix software from Merging Technologies in Switzerland to make these transfers to DSD.  Our sincere thanks to George Klissarov and exaSound for making these releases possible.

More jazz records should be like Sophisticated Lady Quartet, relaxed yet focused, tradition-based yet modern, elegant yet conveying a sure sense of swing. The recording is so pure that you almost feel as if you’re eavesdropping on four musicians who seem completely in their element while performing, in a one-take environment, a set that’s evenly split between previously rehearsed arrangements and performances where they had one chance to turn a composition into a memorable piece of music. No splicing or editing here, just a live-in-the-studio recording where the mood, playing and sonics are so solid that that jazz lovers will wish that the mostly-classical label Yarlung wandered over to this side of the street more often. —Jeff Wilson, The Absolute Sound (more…)

Wilco – Alpha Mike Foxtrot: Rare Tracks 1994-2014 (2014) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 04:40:36 minutes | 3,04 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Source: HDTracks | © Nonesuch Records

Nonesuch Records released two new Wilco collections on November 17 in conjunction with the influential Chicago band’s 20th anniversary: Alpha Mike Foxtrot, a four-disc box-set of rare studio and live recordings collected from the band’s extensive audio archives, and What’s Your 20?, is a two-CD compilation of essential tracks culled from the band’s previously released studio recordings.

Both collections are produced by Grammy-nominated producer Cheryl Pawelski, co-founder of Omnivore Recordings, whose credits include Big Star’s Keep an Eye on the Sky, The Band’s A Musical History, and Townes Van Zandt’s Sunshine Boy: The Unheard Studio Sessions and Demos 1971–1972. These are the first compilations of Wilco music of any kind.

“Like a lot of fans, I had collected these straggling tracks over the past two decades of following Wilco’s every move,” Pawelski said. “Alpha Mike Foxtrot includes almost every unique, essential performance that appeared on soundtracks, tribute albums and B-sides—and there are probably a few surprises for even the sharpest collector. This set presents an alternate history of the band, kind of a sideways view, and ultimately, it’s a super-fun listening experience.”

Alpha Mike Foxtrot features 64 pages of liner notes that include track-by-track recollections from Tweedy, notes by band members Nels Cline and John Stirratt, and reflections from members of Wilco’s extended professional family. The booklet also showcases dozens of archival and never-before-seen photos from a wide array of photographers chronicling all phases of the band’s career.
