The album was scheduled to be released on 3 December 2021, but released early on 1 December 2021, through XL Recordings as a continuation to her 2020 record Kick I, and is the third entry in the Kick quintet. Kick II, Kick III, Kick IIII and Kick V are to be released the same week. Kick III has been supported by lead single “Incendio”, and “Electra Rex”. Its cover art was photographed by Frederik Heyman.

Produced and recorded by Arca, KiCk i defines a new era of multiplex harmony for the Venezuelan artist, singer, DJ, performer and experimental music composer. With appearances from Björk, Rosalía, Shygirl and Sophie, this is the first time Arca has invited collaborators into her world, previously having lent her sound to some of the decades most avant-pop artists.

KiCk i is a celebration not only of the joy Arca’s been able to find in her life, but the sometimes arduous journey it took for her to find it. Her struggles to reconcile her Venezuelan heritage and her trans Latinx identity emerge as reggaetón and pop en Español. But KiCk i isn’t just a pop record, or an experimental record, or even simply a mix between the two, but rather all of them at once- and so much more. Depending on where you drop the needle you’ll find bubblegum, harsh noise, electronic psychedelia, balladry, bangers, laughter, tears, passion, and expressions of faith – sounds and ideas that don’t simply blend together, but coexist simultaneously in quantum superposition made possible inside the sonic worlds Arca builds in her music.

Land of Gold originated in the context of the humanitarian plight of refugees. It coincided with the time when I had recently given birth to my second child. I was deeply troubled by the intense contrast between my ability to provide for my baby, and others who desperately wanted to provide the same security for their children but were unable to do so. The narrative thread carried throughout the album evokes themes of disconnection, vulnerability and the underlying hope that persists in our darkest experiences. My instrument is the terrain in which I explore the gamut of emotional expression evoking shades of aggression, anger and tenderness, while incorporating elements of classical minimalism, jazz, electronica and Indian classical styles. Now for something completely different! Äkta (ék tuh), a Swedish word meaning “genuine” or “true”, is the name of this fiddle ensemble from Minnesota dedicated to the keeping of traditional Swedish music. That’s what we have here – three folk fiddlers, a guitarist and a bassist – genuine Swedish folk musicians, except they are young Americans who when asked if they wanted to dress up in traditional costumes for the cover photo answered in unison, “NO!” They learned the music the traditional way, by listening and playing every week at Swedish gatherings. They have also performed at an annual National Folk Festival in Michigan. There are 17 short tracks here, many of them polkas, with a march and a couple waltzes. The musical skills of these amateurs are apparent, and the clarity and realism of the multichannel recording helps pick out the individual instruments and immerse yourself in the music. However, not being Swedish myself or heavily into traditional music, I found the tunes, rhythms and key signatures all very similar from one track to another and became a little too immersed before getting to the end of the disc.

“Born This Way” is a song by American singer Lady Gaga, and the lead single from her second studio album of the same name. Written by Gaga and Jeppe Laursen, who produced it along with Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, the track was developed while Gaga was on the road with The Monster Ball Tour. Inspired by 1990s music which empowered women and the gay community, Gaga explained that “Born This Way” was her freedom song. She sang part of the chorus at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in 2010 and announced the song as the lead single from the album, released on February 11, 2011.

“Born This Way” is backed by rumbling synth sounds, a humming bass and additional chorus percussion, with sole organ toward the end. The lyrics discuss the self-empowerment of minorities including the LGBT community as well as racial minorities, referring to “cholas” and “orients”, which drew criticism from Latino and Asian communities. Critics positively reviewed the song, calling it a “club-ready anthem”, though it faced criticism for having similarities with Madonna’s 1989 single “Express Yourself”. The song reached number one in over 25 countries and was her third single to top the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and the 1,000th song in that chart’s history (since 1958) to reach number one. “Born This Way” has sold 8.2 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Nick Knight directed the accompanying music video, which was inspired by surrealist painters like Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon. Gaga is depicted as giving birth to a new race during a prologue. After a series of dance sequences, the video concludes with the view of a city populated by this race. Critics noted the video’s references to the work of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Björk, and the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, as well as to Greek mythology and surrealism.

Gaga performed the song at the 53rd Grammy Awards after coming out of an incubating vessel. It was also performed during the last leg of The Monster Ball Tour and on television shows such as Saturday Night Live, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and Good Morning America. The song was treated with different remixes, including a “Country Road” version recorded by Gaga herself and another by Indian production duo Salim-Sulaiman. Alice Cooper, Madonna, Katy Perry, Maria Aragon, and the cast of the TV series Glee have covered the song.

Howard Shore’s music for the massively successful first film chapter of Tolkien’s Ring saga won him the Oscar® for Best Original Score, something of a surprise given the music’s ambitious scale and determinedly dark overtones, factors that handily blurred the line between typical film fantasy music and accomplished concert work. Its sequel takes the same, often Wagnerian-scaled dramatic tack, following the film’s story line into even more brooding and ominous dark corners. The previous film’s Hobbit-inspired pastoralism is supplanted here by rich ethnic textures that expand the musical scope of Middle-earth and the World of Men; the Hardanger, a Norwegian fiddle, represents the Rohan and the North African rhaita colors the Mordor theme, while log drums, dilruba, wood xylophone, and cimbalon add intriguing textures elsewhere. The score’s looming orchestral clouds are brightened by Shore’s masterful choral writing, which infuses ancient liturgical influences with various solo turns by Isabel Bayrakdarian, indie-pop star Sheila Chandra, Ben Del Maestro, and Elizabeth Fraser. “Gollum’s Song,” the composer’s concluding collaboration with lyricist Fran Walsh, is delivered with Björkish, postmodern angst by Emiliana Torrini, and helps punctuate the story’s modern sense of allegory. –Jerry McCulley
