Los Indios Tabajaras was a guitar duo of two brothers from Ceará, in the Northeast of Brazil.
Probably as early as 1943, RCA’s Latin American arm signed them to a recording contract. In the early 1950s, they took a break from performing and went back to study the guitar. After returning to the stage later that same decade, they released an album in the United States on an RCA-owned label named Vox.
Throughout this period, they had a steady stream of releases on RCA in Mexico and one of these, a Mexican popular tune named “María Elena”, became a steady seller, a success throughout Latin America and was finally released on a single in the U.S. in 1963. It spent 14 weeks on the Hot 100 in the fall of 1963.

When looking at the trusting musical encounter between flute and harp, it appears that a large number of scores have been unjustly neglected. This long list of works that have been hidden in the shadows underscores the perfect match between the two instruments and lends further legitimacy to their amicable bond. The ensemble Les Connivences Sonores was born in 2014 from the meeting between two musicians with inexhaustible curiosity, Odile Renault, flute and Elodie Reibaud, harp. From their common passion is born a whole project of discovery and rediscovery of a rich and magnificent original repertoire of chamber music. At it’s center is quite naturally the flute and harp duo, of which Odile and Elodie explore the astonishing extent of the repertoire, which goes from the 18th century to the present day, by means of extremely organic playing. The great romantic repertoire allows them to devote themselves to the carnal and virtuoso dimension of their respective instruments. The 20th century, meanwhile, never ceases to amaze them with it’s diversity of languages. Contemporary creation brings them the wealth of contact with composers and all aspects of research related to creation.

Who was Lisa Marné? A TV personality. A ballerina. A burlesque performer. A political scandal-starter. A plane crash survivor. But most importantly, at least for our purposes, she was one hell of a singer. Those who know her, certainly know her as the “bookend” opposite Vikki Carr on the Ray Anthony Show.
From tongue-in-cheek beatnik love songs to bossa nova standards, this unissued album features never-before-heard cuts from the home of Tony Tamburello, a renowned pianist and vocal coach who worked with everyone from Tony Bennett to Judy Garland. Lisa Marné, who presumably was one of his clients, finally gets the spotlight in this long overdue release.
It’s impossible to know where Marné’s career might have gone if Like Young had been released. But her vocal power, precision, and personality are too vivid to be obscured, even by six decades of hiding.

As the sun sets on a quaint East Nashville house, a young man bares a piece of his soul. Facing the camera, sporting a silky suit jacket/shirt/slacks/fingerless gloves ensemble that announces “singer” before he’s even opened his mouth, Lee Tracy Johnson settles onto his stage, the front yard. He sways to the dirge-like drum machine pulse of a synth-soaked slow jam, extends his arms as if gaining his balance, and croons in affecting, fragile earnest, “I need your love… oh baby…” Dogs in the yard next door begin barking. A mysterious cardboard robot figure, beamed in from galaxies unknown and affixed to a tree, is less vocal. Lee doesn’t acknowledge either’s presence. He’s busy feeling it, arms and hands gesticulating. His voice rises in falsetto over the now-quiet dogs, over the ambient noise from the street that seeps into the handheld camcorder’s microphone, over the recording of his own voice played back from a boombox off-camera. After six minutes the single, continuous shot ends. In this intimate creative universe there are no re-takes. There are many more music videos to shoot, and as Lee later puts it, “The first time you do it is actually the best. Because you can never get that again. You expressing yourself from within.” “I Need Your Love” dates from a lost heyday. From some time in the ’80s or early ’90s, when Lee Tracy (as he was known in performance) and his music partner/producer/manager Isaac Manning committed hours upon hours of their sonic and visual ideas to tape. Embracing drum machines and synthesizers – electronics that made their personal futurism palpable – they recorded exclusively at home, live in a room into a simple cassette deck. Soul, funk, electro and new wave informed their songs, yet Lee and Isaac eschewed the confinement of conventional categories and genres, preferring to let experimentation guide them.

Lingua Ignota is classically trained vocalist Kristin Hayter. This music is sorrowful and almost religiously lamenting past regrets and abhors pleasure it seems. Songs, such as REPENT NOW CONFESS NOW can leave one in a depressed state of mind. Frequently drawing comparisons to Diamanda Galás, Hayter’s vocals range from a delicate soprano to harsh shrieking, and her recordings, including 2019’s Caligula and 2021’s Sinner Get Ready, are ambitious, bracing blends of opera, power electronics, avant-metal, and folk influences. It’s a record born out of a period of turbulence for Hayter, as she stared down the barrel of a burgeoning pandemic, further compounded by the reverberations of a serious spinal injury sustained at a live performance, and its resulting surgery and recuperation. The unsettled foundations echo Hayter’s own Catholic upbringing and subsequent adoption of atheism, and across these nine tracks she creates a metaphorical ecosystem that ruminates on the impact of piety, rebirth, forgiveness, and catharsis. (If I’d scared you enough to lead you away from listening to the Covid-19 Pandemic Variant lament, I am sorry as that was not the intention). I want you to experience that epiphany I do believe she is trying to portray! SINNER GET READY is an uncompromising and often unsettling assessment of religion, but not outright damnation. Instead, an allegorical mirror is assembled using impressive songcraft and informed themes to display the conflict, duality, and divergence often present in the sacrosanct. Despite its theological bearings, this is no self-indulgent enlightenment project. It’s no less urgent, or immediate than previous works, and alongside flexing her multi-hyphenate musical capabilities and assertion as a visual and artistic auteur, Lingua Ignota once again exceeds expectations. This is a terrifyingly real LP that will surely blow your mind. (Not for the feint of mind PG-17 to be sure!) Pax and chillax with this album, thoughts? Luv, Murf

With Lux laetitiae , La Reverdie continues its discographical journey after the success of its most recent production devoted to Francesco Landini: from the Florence of the great blind composer of the fourteenth century, to the splendour of the Este court in fifteenth-century Ferrara! The programme presents twelve pieces from an important codex that belonged to the court, in which fashionable composers such as Guillaume Dufay and John Dunstaple tried their hand at the motet genre. The performances combine six voices with a rich array of instruments and aim to reproduce the resplendent sound of the Este cappella at the time of Lionello and Borso, passionate patrons who attracted to Ferrara many talented artists charged with adorning the court with art, beauty and harmony. An exploration of the prolific tradition of the Marian cult which, from the twelfth century onwards, was manifested in an extraordinary wealth of musical forms and which, in the fifteenth century, resulted in grandiose compositions that can still captivate us today with their complexity and fascination.

La Serenissima’s latest CD is all about Nicola Matteis the Younger (c. 1670-1737). Born in London to Italian Nicola Matteis, he grew up listening to the music of Purcell before leaving England in 1700 for the imperial court in Vienna. The music on the album is “Carolingian”; it was written either for Charles II of England or for Emperor Charles VI. One might think that English style and English musicians were unknown on the Continent in the early 18th century, but this selection shows that this was not (always) the case.

For our first album, we have chosen three original works that have accompanied us through six years of experimentation, training, travel and success as a quintet.
