An album of arrangements for harp made by the artist herself of some dearly loved and familiar works.

Richard Strauss: Morgen

“Richard Strauss is one of my absolute favorite composers. Whether it is his opera Rosenkavalier or his Vier Letzte Lieder, they are all masterpieces that move. So is the song “Morgen”, which in all its simplicity immediately finds a straight line to everyone’s heart. I hope that even without the sung words, the essence and beauty of this work are conveyed in this version for harp solo.”

Erich Korngold: Tanzlied des Pierrot

“Through my work at the Wiener Staatsoper, I played many wonderful operas. One of the most beautiful ones is “Tote Stadt” in which Korngold makes eager use of the harp. Tanzlied des Pierrot is an enchanting intimate excerpt of this opera.”

Franz Schubert: Ständchen

“When it comes to Schubert’s famous Ständchen, Vienna is not far away and may not need much further explanation. This is one of the last songs the Austrian composer composed, and it remains beautiful, with or without words.”

W.A. Mozart: Fantasia

“Mozart only did find his way to the harp via the double concerto for flute and harp. At that time, the chromatic possibilities of the harp were not as developed and therefore less interesting. Thanks to the modern double pedal system, it is a wonderful challenge to transpose this Fantasy for piano on harp, among others, and to place it in a new light.”

Mandolinist Alon Sariel continues his series of Bach transcriptions with Plucked Bach II. On his first Plucked Bach album (jpc 10925407), Sariel played the cello suites on a variety of plucked instruments. In this new recording, however, he plays works for lute, organ and violin – all on “only” two types of mandolin. With a distinctive and groundbreaking interpretation of his own transcriptions and arrangements, Sariel succeeds in breathing new life into some very familiar works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The iconoclastic Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565) for the organ takes on a contemplative and intimate character on the mandolin. Excerpts from the Lute Suite (BWV 998) and the Violin Partita No. 3 in E major (BWV 1006) are painted in a completely new color palette. In Bach’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor (BWV 1003), Alon Sariel demonstrates the incredible suitability of the mandolin for Bach’s music. And as an encore, you will hear his interpretation of Ysaÿe’s dazzling Obsession.

Alon Sariel is one of today’s most versatile performers, known as a multi-instrumentalist in the field of plucked strings and with a growing reputation as a fascinating Bach interpreter.

With her latest recording, Origami, pianist Louise Bessette unveils a few pages from the musical journal of Montréal composer Anthony Rozankovic. His “origami music” or “score sculptures” are alternately dissonant, syncopated, consonant, lyrical, or chaotic, according to film producer Carl Leblanc, author of the album’s liner notes.

11 of the 16 sixteen pieces on Origami started out as film music, with the composer conveying intense emotions — from the fate of migrants (Errance) to a greeting card in the form of a paper bouquet at Auschwitz (Origami). Among the other works are four concert pieces including Mosaïque thérianthropique and La Jungle jongle, composed for Louise Bessette.

Greatest Hits is an excellent, thorough 14-track collection containing all of Journey’s big hits, from 1978’s “Wheel in the Sky” to 1986’s “I’ll Be Alright Without You.” Although the songs aren’t presented in chronological order and a handful of minor hits (“Suzanne,” “Walks Like a Lady”) aren’t included, it doesn’t matter, since every essential Journey single — “Only the Young,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Separate Ways,” “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” “Open Arms,” “Send Her My Love” — is here, which means that it’s all most casual fans will ever need. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Love – from many-splendoured and joyous to tragic and rejected, homo- and heterosexual, light-hearted and broken-hearted, heavenly and earthly, innocent and anything but: in their first joint recording, long-term performing partners Harriet Burns and Ian Tindale make a deeply personal choice of Schubert’s lieder, exploring the theme of love, but also the friendships and relationships between poets and the composer out of which he crafted songs of astonishing empathy. Former Winners of the Contemporary Song Prize in the International Vocal Competition at ’s-Hertogenbosch, Ian and Harriet bring an outstanding empathy of their own to songs in which we hear, in Ian’s words, ‘young artists being creative together and exploring things’.

Gruff Rhys – Sadness Sets Me Free (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 42:42 minutes | 481 MB | Genre: Alternative Rock

Gruff Rhys is pleased to announce his new album “Sadness Sets Me Free” which will be released by Rough Trade Records. This incredibly will be the 25th album he has released in his 35 year career individually, collaboratively and as a member of various bands. “Sadness Sets Me Free” is also the follow up to 2021’s “Seeking new Gods”, his first solo top ten record. Lead-off single “Celestial Candyfloss” is a telling four minute glimpse of the forthcoming album, revealing the heady wonders and classic pop sounds within. Soaring strings carry the sweet melodies along, anchored by just enough necessary melancholy to add emotional ballast. The eye-popping video was created by long-time collaborator Mark James and compliments the scope and style of the song on a galactic scale. “Celestial Candyfloss” is, Gruff says, “an attempted pocket symphony about the cosmic lengths that people will travel in the pursuit of love and acceptance. Mark James has brought the Sadness Sets Me Free album cover to life & managed to place me watching TV interference in a shipping container that’s lost in space. For what is apparently the 25th album I’ve had a hand in writing I’ve reverted to a rich seam of inspiration relating to shedding some light on sadness and the general terror of cosmic loneliness.” And so it was that Gruff and his band – Osian Gwynedd (piano), Huw V Williams (double bass) and former Flaming Lips drummer turned Super Furry Animals archivist Kliph Scurlock (drums) piled into a van driven by the late, legendary tour manager “Dr” Kiko Loiacono and raced from Dunkirk, where they had just played the final show of a tour of Spain and France, to the outskirts of Paris in the early hours of a March morning in 2022. There, in La Frette Studios, a recording facility installed in a 19th-century house, Gruff and his road-hardened group tracked “Sadness Sets Me Free” in just three days. Backing vocals were added along the way by Kate Stables from This Is The Kit along with additional strings and orchestration and it was mixed between Marseille and Cardiff. What finally emerged from these intense bouts of cross-continental activity was Gruff’s most accomplished and beautiful record to date. In a career that has taken him from the slate-mining towns of north-west Wales, down to the expat communities of Patagonia, up to the Mandan tribe of the Great Plains of North America and across to the Tuareg rock groups of the Saharan Desert, Gruff Rhys, one of Britain’s most beloved and successful singer-songwriters, has always been willing to follow an opportunity, wherever it may lead him. “At this point I quite like working with serendipity,” he says. “Not in a cosmic way, [but] I try and leave things open to chance encounters and chance geography. As I’m around 25 albums in I’m always looking for ways to make a different-sounding record”

Future Islands was never meant to last. After eighteen years and 1,400 live shows, Future Islands show they’re not only still here, they’re making the most powerful music of their fascinating, but unexpectedly long and storied career. For Future Islands, albums aren’t a static reflection of a moment in time, they are a fluid chapter in their lives that can change and mutate. People change and pull away. The band is no different, coming up against their future while staring at their past. They’re not the same people they were when Future Islands began nearly two decades ago. They are now spread about, some settled down and some still moving. People Who Aren’t There Anymore reflects the transience of a band’s existence; the rare privilege of travelling all over the world contrasting with the sadness of fleeting moments in and out people’s lives. Being everywhere but also nowhere. Remembering the lives lost and the living they’ll never see again, cherishing the present and being grateful for the past.

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes – Dark Rainbow (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 38:18 minutes | 431 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © International Death Cult

Frank Carter’s breakthrough came as the energetic frontman of the nihilistic hardcore punk band Gallows. He left the band in 2011 to pursue a much more positive approach with his next project, Pure Love. This was also reflected in the sound of their only album “Anthems”, which had clear influences from classic rock and power pop.

The Brit founded Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes together with guitarist Dean Richardson in 2015 to find the perfect middle ground between these two approaches. The energy and directness of hardcore on the one hand, melody and emotion on the other.

With their fifth album “Dark Rainbow”, the band succeeds in this endeavor amazingly perfectly. The songs convince with audibly mature songwriting and even more personal lyrics than before. Musically, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes now allow whatever they like. The framework is still timeless punk rock. In order to cover the necessary spectrum of emotions and energies, however, strings, piano or synthesizers are sometimes used.

This courage for variety suits “Dark Rainbow” perfectly. The album’s sound, which spans epochs and genres, is sometimes even reminiscent of the desert rock of Queens Of The Stone Age.

Orizzonti perduti is Franco Battiato’s thirteenth studio album, released in December 1983 on the Italian EMI label. The album, which the author took particular care during the recording phase, reached seventh place in the charts and was the thirty-second best-selling of 1984. The album, unlike the previous ones, presents a greater use of electronics and computers for the reproduction of sounds, with the total elimination of acoustic instruments. The album is in some ways autobiographical: it is no coincidence, in fact, that the main narrative scenario is the Sicilian environment. Themes such as musical satire and the cultural decadence of the West are then touched upon.

Come Un Cammello In Una Grondaia is Franco Battiato’s sixteenth album, released in 1991.

The album is divided into two parts: the first four songs are works by Battiato while the remaining four are lieder by classical music authors.

It reached tenth place in the charts and sold over 250,000 copies, making it the thirty-fourth best-selling album in Italy during the year.

On the cover there is a detail from a painting by Süphan Barzani, the pseudonym with which Battiato initially signed his paintings.

The title of the album is a quote from Al-Biruni, a Persian scientist who lived in the 11th century, who used to pronounce this phrase to indicate the inadequacy of his language in describing scientific topics.

Schmerzen is one of the five Lieder of the Wesendonck-Lieder cycle (WWV 91), composed by Richard Wagner in 1857 on a poem by Mathilde Wesendonck.

The song Plaisir d’amour (1785) by Johann Paul Aegidius Martin was proposed to Sibilla for the 1984 single Plaisir d’amour/Sex appeal to Europe, the latter composed, like the other songs performed by the singer, by Battiato-Pio . The piece is also cited by Battiato in the song Shakleton (Gommalacca, 1998).

Gestillte Sehnsucht is taken from the Op. 91 Two cantos for contralto, viola and piano (1863-1884) by Johannes Brahms.

Oh Sweet Were the Hours is taken from the Op. 108 Twenty-Five Scottish Songs (1818) by Ludwig Van Beethoven; the English text is attributed to William Smyth (1765-1849). The piece is part of Beethoven’s project to re-arrange songs from British folk heritage.
