“Whether it is necessary, or even right, to follow conventions (the beaten track) when recording music, for example, or whether the performer can claim the right to show the listener the world he lives in, the world he knows best, with all its beauty and its countless oddities, even risks? Should he let the listener into his own territory, that is, into a strange and individual dimension that the audience may not have known existed until now? Nowadays, a carefully crafted recording gives the listener the illusion of a world believed to be flawless, a care that is fundamentally designed to cater to the perfectionism of the audience. A ‘different’ kind of care is therefore needed, one that can breathe life into even a recording.

I have devoted this most recent recording to dance. The pieces that I perform here are all linked to the art of dance from different eras and different cultures.Throughout history and in most people’s perception, dance has always been a source of entertainment and joy, but it can also represent more sombre occasions, with pomp and grandeur. The Chaconne, for example, has become both tragic and sublime over time and today it’s rhythm has mellowed!Chopin’s Mazurkas can be rustic and folkloric, haunting or lyrical, even dramatic. In short, dance can express diametric opposites and unite those opposites at the same time. That’s why I also want to pay homage to Shiva’s dance, for this god, the symbol of destruction, illusion and ignorance, destroys in order to awaken human beings and lead them to create a new world.Shiva’s divine dance, Tandava Nritya, is regarded by Hinduism as the origin of the cycle of creation, preservation and devastation.Vagharshapat Dance is based upon a melody from ‘Yerangi’ found in “Six Dances for Piano” (1906) by the legendary Armenian composer Komitas (1869-1935). Vagharshapat is the location of Etchmiadzin Cathedral and the fourth largest city in Armenia located 11 miles west of Yerevan. My recording ends with Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance”, in an arrangement of my own. The duality of this piece’s character is obvious, as while the sabers suggest the idea of death, the dance becomes a ‘living dance? one that enchants us or, a dance that comes alive. I hope that the current times of wars, destruction and social upheaval will soon be replaced by peace and the joy that comes with it, and I hope that this recording brings a form of respite and quietude and with it lightness, joy and happiness.Vardan Mamikonian”Vardan Mamikonian demonstrates a technique that combines power and poetry… and flashes of interpretive genius.” New York TimesVardan Mamikonian has come to the attention of the international press and public thanks to his prestigious technique and extraordinary musicality. He continued his studies at the Moscow Central Music School and the prestigious Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with Valery Kastelsky, one of the last proteges of the legendary Heinrich Neuhaus. He then went on to perfect his skills at the Piano Academy in Imola, Italy, under the guidance of Lazar Berman. Pierre-Laurent Aimard – Schubert: Ländler (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Star pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard presents Ländler, a collection of charming dances by Franz Schubert. These rustic and cheerful miniatures reveal a fascinating side of Schubert’s musical personality. Their simplicity is deceptive, for these dances are often shaken by Schubert’s harmonically wandering soul, yet remain lyrical, picturesque and melodic. For Aimard, there is a kinship between Schubert’s Ländler and Kurtág’s Játékok, pieces he often performs side by side and which share a combination of playfulness and modernism that is also reminiscent of the great 20th century miniaturist Anton Webern. Avoiding almost any repetition, Aimard is more reminiscent of a sleepwalker’s journey than a series of dances.

Violinist, vocalist and storyteller Susan Reed has crafted a wide-ranging career that includes multiple nationally renowned books and recordings for children. Constantly composing, this album celebrates a year of that writing: reflecting on life, love, the pandemic, politics, and of death and dying. Forming an inspired band to realize these works, Susan’s links to jazz, classical, fiddle and klezmer music provides fertile ground for guitarist Craig Wagner, bassist David Friesen and drummer Steve Barnes’ orchestrations. Thousands of Ways’ mix of instrumentals and songs range from the joyful “Flying My Kite” and “Ribbons in the Wind,” to the subtle soundscape of “Desert Flower” or the tabla driven funk of “Cat Got Your Tongue.”

There’s a heavy-heart feeling that touches every track on ‘Nocturnal’, Sebastian Studnitzky’s latest album. Not quite dark enough to characterize a melancholy, rather the album unfolds a gentle blend of blues and serenity that’s most common on Sunday evenings or during creative insomniac spells at dawn. “All of these songs were composed, produced, and finalized at night time,” notes Studnitzky, who for six months live-streamed midnight sessions of his improvisations to an audience of fellow night owls. Nocturnal captures Studnitzky’s solo introspection during these late sessions of playing the trumpet, piano and electronics, but more than just retaining the gloom of his surroundings, this music also expresses many of the unique feelings associated with the after-hours; haziness and obscurity dabbed with lucid insights, peaceful meditations punctured with quiet longings.
