For his series called Schubert+, pianist Can Çakmur juxtaposes the complete major piano solo compositions by the Viennese composer with works by others who were inspired by his music, thus providing the opportunity to see these works in a new light. While making up a near complete anthology of Schubert’s completed major piano music, each disc is also intended as a self-contained recital. In this third instalment, Çakmur presents not only a work by the 20th-century composer Ernst Krenek but also Krenek’s completion of an unfinished sonata by Schubert. In the process, Krenek assimilated the Schubertian language so well that the result is astonishing. As Çakmur says, ‘I would find it difficult to spot where Schubert ends and Krenek begins if it wasn’t specified in the score.’ Krenek, whose career spanned more than seven decades, was a prolific composer who embraced a host of styles. For his Second Piano Sonata, composed in the 1920s, he pays homage to Schubert by adopting some of his techniques, though the music owes much more to early 20th-century Paris than to 19th-century Vienna. A fascinating and neglected work to be discovered through the prism of Schubert.

With the “Something Blue” series of releases, my goal is to present a series of focused and concise performances to create maximum enjoyment. For this 2023 release, I specifically focused on assembling a group of talented composers. I selected some familiar collaborators; bassist Boris Kozlov, alto saxophonist Markus Howell and drummer Donald Edwards. I also chose some “new” faces as well; tenor saxophonist Willie Morris, trombonist Altin Sencalar, and pianist Misha Tsiganov. 15-year-old multi-cultural newcomer Safiyah Hernandez will release her debut album Homesick on February 1 via BMG/Young Forever.
Safiyah has found songwriting as a form of catharsis in dealing with the overwhelming emotions of adolescence, the difficulties in navigating the culture of your upbringing while living in a Western society, familial bonds, loss, and the current state of the world. This creative outlet provided a kind of stability throughout her developing years, especially as Safiyah shifted from homeschooling in the Bay Area to an arts school on the East Coast.
Written over the course of three years, Homesick weaves together influences of Arabic and Indian music, alternative rock, hip-hop, and soul, resulting in an album that effortlessly creates a collision of sounds that is as natural as it is innovative.

Why, in a booklet accompanying a recording of “Flute Music at the Court of Frederick the Great”, is an attempt being made at this point to take a look into the soul of a damaged monarch? There is a guiding “thread of Ariadne” that leads through the labyrinthine trials and tribulations of Frederick’s life and suffering – a singular passion that he discovered at a young age and never forgot throughout his life. It is the love of music, especially the love of playing the “flûte traversière”.

The recording collaboration with the great violinist Salvatore Accardo continues, which began 29 years ago.
In this project Maestro Accardo plays with the violinist Laura Gorna and the pianist Maria Grazia Bellocchio. This double album contains chamber music by Sergej Prokofiev where the violin is the protagonist: from Sonata in re magg. Op.115 per Violino Solo to 5 Melodies per Violino e Piano etc…
I recorded this album in the Sala dell’Ermellino – Casa della Musica, Milan in February 2020.

The group were finishing off a huge US tour that had roared down the east coast then across the Midwest and by the time they hit LA, as Brian recalls the group was performing at their height.
The show opens with a hyper fast version of ‘Beginning Again’ due to drummer Steve Ferrone being almost an hour late and running high on adrenaline, Brian remembers thinking “I don’t even know if I can play it that fast!”. Fortunately, he and the Oblivion Express including stellar vocalist Alex Ligertwood rise to the challenge and the result is akin to some frenetic jazzy drum & bass but also pushes the group onto another level altogether for the rest of the show. Across both volumes there are no fillers and the highlights are many, but especially the epic version of ‘Maiden Voyage’ which Mos Def sampled on his 1997 ‘If You Can Huh! You Can Hear’, and both DJ Mitsu in 2004 and 2017 Crimeapple both dipped into Live Oblivion to sample that fire for their own projects.

When it was released at the end of 1974, this album seemed pretty redundant to fans of Brian Auger’s band. Two of the four songs had just been released in superior studio versions a few months earlier, and the two other selections from Second Wind had little new to offer over their studio versions. In retrospect, the music is good, but this record is not the place to start for an introduction to the music of this fine band.
