A little more than a year ago Elefant released a very special album from a new project called THE LAST DETAIL, a super group, formed by FUGU and A GIRL CALLED EDDY. Or in other words, Mehdi Zannad and Erin Moran. Just over a year later, here they are releasing an album that many people didn’t ever think would ever come, the second A GIRL CALLED EDDY album. While her debut came out in 2004 to much critical acclaim and was produced by Richard Hawley, it has been a while to say the least. But here is “Been Around” and yes, it was definitely worth the wait. Very much worth it. Throughout her career she has collaborated and provided vocals on projects as varied as Ron Sexsmith (“Exit Strategy Of The Soul”), SUPER FURRY ANIMALS, to French superstar Phillip Katerine’s indie classic “Parlez Vous Anglais, Mr. Katerine?”. Her debut album saw her out on tour supporting acts as diverse as Josh Ritter, Rufus Wainwright, THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH and THE CURE. And with that first record Moran has gathered a rather impressive list of fans: from Jane Birkin, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Tracey Thorn to Robert Smith, Don Henley, Jarvis Cocker and Burt Bacharach to name just a few. “Been Around” has arrived looking like a classic. Referencing her hero’s from Laura Nyro, and Van Morrison, to Steely Dan and PREFAB SPROUT, she has put together a collection of songs that still sound completely her own. They bring an essence of the past and real heart to the present. To a 21st century desperately in need of this kind of elegance, soul and inspiration, it is welcome indeed. The arrangements on this album work on a different level to Morans debut. Where that album was steeped in dark melancholy, this record seems to bathe in the warm yellow Kodachrome-glow of the best of the 1970’s. A looking back, but not pastiche. A sense of genuineness and heart permeates every track. This is an album so full of detail and wonder that we could go on and on. “Been Around” is an enormous record. Made with love. Made the old-fashioned way. Perhaps thats where its timelessness comes from. Is reaching this exceptional and rich level of composition and emotion justification for such a long silence from A GIRL CALLED EDDY? Is that a question even worth asking? You haven’t heard an album like this in fifteen years. She’s back. Dig in and enjoy.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Neeme Järvi – A Festival of Fučík (2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:19:51 minutes | 1,44 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Chandos

Thirty years after having recorded Dvořák’s complete Symphonies on Chandos, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and its laureate conductor Neeme Järvi tackle another romantic Czech composer: Julius Fučík, famous for his more than 400 polkas, marches, and waltzes, some of the best of which are featured here.
Fučík studied violin in his early years, switching later to the bassoon, with a subsidiary in percussion and timpani. Playing in Austrian regiments, he gained invaluable experience of writing for military band and became a very prolific composer of marches. The most famous of these is of course Entry of the Gladiators, completed in 1899 and performed throughout the world ever since.

Full of energetic, effervescent Bohemian crossrhythms, tuneful brass melodies (often now associated with a circus atmosphere), but also more lyrical expressions, this album is a festival in itself.

Over the last decade A Day To Remember has steadily risen to become a household name in the modern rock genre. The band’s palatable and hooky song structure has won over crowds from the punk and pop community, and they’ve managed to simultaneously exist in the heavy music scene with their knack for shapeshifting breakdowns and aggressive tendencies. A Day To Remember floats so seamlessly between these aesthetics that it’s permitted them to tour and collaborate with a bevy of different genre defining artists. Back in 2016 they toured with the pop-punk kings Blink-182, in 2019 they collaborated with Marshmello for the hit single “Rescue Me,” and just prior to the pandemic the band was gearing up for a summer metal tour with Slipknot.

“Orlando Gibbons is my favorite composer—always has been. I can’t think of anybody who represents the end of an era better than Orlando Gibbons does.” This profession of faith in the great English virginalist is more than an act of defiance: it harks back to Gould’s early childhood experiences with Puritanism.

A Certain Ratio – who celebrate their 40th anniversary this year – release a new box set, acr:box, out on Mute. acr:box launches with a brand new acoustic version of ‘Won’t Stop Loving You’ (AKA The Big E) here titled ‘W.S.L.U.’, a recent collaboration with Parent’s Sarah Brandwood-Spencer (string arrangement) and Jason Brown (additional guitars). acr:box was remastered by Martin Moscrop at Abbey Road studios. Featuring over 20 unreleased tracks, the box set will be available as a 7 x coloured vinyl set, set and digitally and its release will coincide with a series of dates. Following on from 2018’s compilation, acr:set, the box showcases the diversity of the singles, B-sides and alternative versions of tracks that A Certain Ratio have released, but without repeating tracks recently made available. acr:box collates everything that fans had been missing from the recent reissue campaign, and compliments that with a selection found after a deep delve into the archive to find all the hidden gems that had been talked about over the years, but never heard – even a few releases the band had forgotten about! Looking to make the box set as comprehensive as possible, even the original tapes from the session they recorded for a collaboration with Grace Jones were uncovered and reworked. This session includes the cover version of Talking Heads’ ‘Houses In Motion’, using Jez Kerr’s guide vocals (pre to him becoming the band’s singer). Grace Jones never completed her vocal take, after attending one of the recording sessions with the band.

ACR and The Emperor Machine’s collaboration came about after a chance meeting at an Andrew Weatherall Weekender outside Todmorden’s infamous Golden Lion. Andrew Meecham (aka The Emperor Machine) explains, “It was Martin who suggested we should maybe collaborate so I sent him a track I’d been working on and when I received the track back, I’ve got to be honest, I was a bit nervous because I’m an ACR fan and wanted to be so perfect. I put my headphones on, pressed play and it totally blew me away. It was just what I was hoping for and more.”

Footprint is delighted to release the debut recording from Härlanda Chamber Choir in the ensemble’s tenth anniversary year. A bright star shineth is an atmospheric celebration of Christmas music from throughout Europe, from the Sixteenth Century to the present day.

Härlanda Chamber Choir was founded in 2007 by its conductor David Molin. The ensemble has since picked up first prize at countless choral competitions and charmed audience and congregations with its warm, inviting sound. A bright star shineth is described by Molin as ‘a labour of love and laughter.’

The recording charts a Christmas journey from France to Iceland, via England, Wales, Ireland and of course Sweden. Traditional songs in alluring arrangements by Åke Hillerud and John Rutter and more are heard alongside original compositions by the likes of Francis Poulenc, Thomas Tallis and Morten Lauridsen.

The choir pays homage to its own roots with a traditional song from the Halland Province, Guds son är född (arranged by Otto Olsson). Two premiere recordings from Scandinavian composers complete the picture: Ola Gjeilo’s striking Det hev ei rose sprunge and Anna Cederberg-Orreteg’s emotive interpretation of Sibelius’s Julvisa.

With fulsome, warm singing and careful direction from Molin, A bright star shineth combines head and heart this festive season, ‘our birthday gift to ourselves and a Christmas present to the world’, in the choir’s own words.

In the mid-1980s, Donna Agrell acquired a rare Grenser & Wiesner bassoon, built in Dresden sometime around 1820. She has been using it for more than 1,500 performances since then, many of them with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, of which she has been a member since it was founded. The bassoon came in its original case, with an address label indicating that the instrument had been delivered to Stockholm. Further research into the Stockholm music scene during the early 19th century revealed that instruments from Grenser & Wiesner were popular in Sweden. One who swore by his bassoon from the company was Frans Preumayr, a musician of German origin who played in the orchestra of the Royal Opera, but also made a name for himself abroad as a bassoon virtuoso, garnering praise in London and on the continent. Such a gifted player naturally inspired composers to write for him, and these included his father-in-law, the clarinet virtuoso Berhard Henrik Crusell, the flamboyant music director at the Stockholm opera, Édouard Du Puy, and a young Franz Berwald, employed among the strings of the opera orchestra. For the present recording Donna Agrell has chosen three chamber works which were all premièred with Preumayr on the bassoon. She is joined by colleagues from the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century as well as by Ronald Brautigam – all of them playing period instruments – in Berwald’s celebrated Septet in B flat major and the less well-known Quartet for piano and winds, and in Du Puy’s Quintet for bassoon and strings.
