Recorded using the world’s rarest 1685 Stradivarius violin and the 1785 Franconi Seve Tut bow, it is rare for two valuable instruments with centuries-old history to remain in good sound. In particular, the bow, because of the performance of the bow hair brought about by the loss cannot be manually repaired, so that such recordings are more precious.

Stradivarius’s 1685 violin and Fransoni Seve Tut’s 1785 bow are the perfect combination.
Record with the world’s few Didrik De Geer Swedish hand-made microphones, with frequencies up to 200kHz.

Record in a concert hall that is several times wider than a regular studio.
Violinist Huamura Huili Xiang (Erika Hanamura) is well-known both at home and abroad, playing with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions. She had stopped all performances because of a fractured left hand, but she overcame the effects of her injury to get back on stage and shine. With a high rating in the industry for her thick, thin hair, this album is her album debut. The flower village of Huili Xiang plays with a top-of-the-line combination of Stradivarius’s 1685 violin and Fransoni Seve Tut’s 1785 bow, and the extremely rare high-quality recording technique is one of the highlights of the album.

Born in Tokyo, Yukio Kamura learned the violin from an early age. The 9-year-old teacher is from Jiang Fuji and Angela two teachers. He won an award in the Japanese Student Music Competition and studied in the UK after graduating from the University of Pu Peng. Follow R. Flanders at the Royal Academy of Music to learn to play the violin. After returning home to hold a number of solo concerts and chamber orchestra concerts, she with the perfect tone and musical sense of high praise. As violinist and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra, the Rousey Philharmonic Orchestra and other well-known orchestras touring all over Europe, has achieved remarkable achievements. After performing with the pianist Jorge Demus in Austria and the East Beijing-Tianjin-Tiantian Hall in 2007, he worked with the Prince’s Hall in 2009 and the Tokyo Cultural Hall in 2015.

~ Recorded at Palace of Arts, Budapest. 30 November, 1-2 December 2013 ~

The 9th is a heartbreaking symphony, perhaps in many ways. It starts with an arythmic heartbeat which moves colourfully from one instrument to the next. The choice of instruments is extraordinary and somewhat sinister: cello, horn, harp, muted horn. Mahler immediately shows us his most mature, masterful handling of orchestral colours. Soon we realise that it is merely an introduction to a beautiful but heartbreakingly sad melody played by the violins, saying Leb wohl! Farewell!

A most complex, extremely forward-looking, visionary symphony follows, occasionally brutally interrupted by those arythmic beats and leading finally to the most tragic and beautiful ending Mahler ever composed: what he shares with us is his fading awareness of our beloved world.

A master of the subtle art of rhythm guitar as well as a gifted soloist, Bucky Pizzarelli, was known for his uncommonly sweet and delicate tone and disarmingly straightforward approach to melodic line. He became a mainstay of the New York jazz scene, often performing with his celebrated son John. Pizzarelli was among the few guitarists to play an instrument with seven strings rather than the customary six. (His son John was another; George van Eps is believed to have been the first.) The extra string, tuned to a low A, enabled him to provide his own bass line, an important advantage when he played unaccompanied or in a duo setting. He continued to perform into his 90s, even after hospitalizations.
He died of the coronavirus in 2020 at the age of 94.

Amsterdam-based Aros is an international sextet co-led by Canadian saxophonist Rob Armus and Austrian classical pianist Marion von Tilzer. Their collective influences and experience notably include American jazz and improvised music, European classical and new music and tango. Imagine, for example, Astor Piazzolla and Philip Glass combining forces to create modal jazz with an occasional nod to free improv. There’s quite a range of moods and styles on this 2004 album, from heartfelt lyrical intimacy to driving soul jazz vamps. Recorded and mixed entirely in DSD, this vibrant recording is Aros’s first North American release.

Arturo Toscanini (/ɑːrˈtʊəroʊ ˌtɒskəˈniːni/; Italian: [arˈtuːro toskaˈniːni]; March 25, 1867 – January 16, 1957) was an Italian conductor. He was one of the most acclaimed and influential musicians of the late 19th and early 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his eidetic memory. He was at various times the music director of La Scala in Milan and the New York Philharmonic. Later in his career he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937–54), and this led to his becoming a household name (especially in the United States) through his radio and television broadcasts and many recordings of the operatic and symphonic repertoire.

While bandleader and pianist Arturo O’Farrill has always sought to preserve the legacy of Latin jazz, he’s never been one to do so it for its own sake, but always for evolutionary purposes. The Offense of the Drum features his 18-piece Afro-Latin Jazz band – a whopping 28 percussion instruments from all over the globe – and a notable host of collaborators including Donald Harrison and Vijay Iyer. The program highlights the cultural sounds and prismatic influences of South America, Spain, and the Caribbean in modern jazz. “Cuarto de Colores” weds the Brazilian, Colombian and Afro-Cuban rhythms to post-bop big-band jazz. Colombian harpist Edmar Castañeda, trumpeter Jonathan Powell, and O’Farrill all deliver excellent solos. “They Came” weds spoken word from Chilo Cajigas and reggaeton – via DJ Logic’s turntablism – to modern big-band jazz. “On the Corner of Malecón and Bourbon” digs deep into the intersections of Latin music and jazz histories. The blues in NOLA’s legacy are present in the trumpet, but that’s only the beginning; there are stops along the way throughout the evolution of jazz – including a momentary stop at free – and second-line, as Spanish melody and Caribbean rhythms provide extensive harmonic colors and rhythmic accents. Iyer’s “The Mad Hatter” was written for O’Farrill. Here, strident, knotty rhythmic lines cut across angular lyric melodies and layered harmonies with fantastic solos by the composer and trumpeter Seneca Black. The set’s hinge piece is the title track, a suite inspired by the banning of drum circles in New York City. Stringent contrapuntal brass sections work against the djembe for an extended period before O’Farrill’s piano signals detente. Chad Lefkowitz-Brown’s saxophone solo, followed by the pulsing interplay of djembe and deep-toned Japanese taiko drums, begins to open the work up from the inside. Drums begin to dominate in the second section even as the brass attempts to regain control. Eventually, the two lines intersect in a wild, colorful, songlike celebration in the final segment. The closer is a reading of “Iko Iko” with Harrison. Perhaps no other tune better reflects the commingling of Afro-Latin music as it was translated to North America through the variety of textures, cadences, carnival rhythms, and melodies of the Caribbean. The staggered brass and reed sections meet and greet the drums as they march, strut, swagger, and swing. By virtue of its disciplined execution, cultural queries, and celebratory inspiration, The Offense of the Drum is only O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra’s most ambitious moment to date.

It is February 2021 and Berlin is unreally quiet. Snow covers the streets and muffles the sound of the few cars braving the streets of a metropolis in lockdown. Our recording location, the Staatsoper Unter der Linden, is in an equally unreal state: the hectic daily rhythm of the opera house is on hiatus, with only one opera in rehearsal, and for only one performance. And this single performance will be for an empty hall, with only cameras for audience. In the midst of this unusually quiet setting are a singer, a pianist, and a special work, Schubert’s Winterreise.

With her latest solo project Loopholes, Andrea Motis, currently the exponent of the Spanish jazz scene, embarks on a search for a completely new, unconventional style with her formation and expanded concept with her own compositions and those of her comrade-in-arms Christoph Mallinger by borrowing from “electric jazz”, “funk” and “neo-soul”. Motis sings both soulfully and impulsively in Catalan, her mother tongue, as well as in Spanish, Portuguese, English and German, and comments on her vocal expression alternately – trained on both instruments – with trumpet or saxophone. Chet Baker and Dexter Gordon may have been the inspiration for this. As a young star, she recorded her first album with jazz standards at the tender age of 15 and later became the first Iberian artist ever to release on internationally renowned jazz labels. She has worked with Quincy Jones, Scott Hamilton, the classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the WDR Big Band, among others. We can look forward to Loopholes, which is scheduled for release in spring 2022.
