Sorti en 1992, Tour Novice est le deuxième album live d’Alain Bashung, et offre des extraits de concerts datant de 1987 (tournée Passé Le Rio Grande…) et 1990 (tournée Novice). On sait que Bashung était friand de jeux de mots (son parolier attitré jusqu’en 1989, Boris Bergman, en raffolait aussi), et le nom de l’album en est un beau : Tour Novice, “tournevis”. Comme Novice, qui peut se lire normalement, ou “no vice”, ou “nos vices”. Bashung, accompagné des batteurs François Causse et Jean-My Truong, des guitaristes Olivier Guindon, Toxy, Richard Mortier et Jean Cadic, des bassistes Didier Batard et François Delage, des claviéristes Vic Emerson et Jean-Pierre Pilot, et du saxophoniste Michel Billiez, offre ici des versions remarquables des meilleures chansons de sa période 1981-1989. Même si certains classiques (S.O.S. Amor, Gaby Oh Gaby, Bijou Bijou, Vertige De L’Amour, Elégance, L’Arrivée Du Tour) manquent à l’appel. Elles manquent, elles manquent à la pelle, comme il le chante d’ailleurs sur Résidences, qui manque aussi à l’appel sur ce live.

Amor (chanson presente ici) apres deux albums n’ayant pas obtenu de succes. Avec cet album detonnant, Alain Bashung s’impose comme l’un des plus beaux fleurons de la scene rock francaise. Enregistre en banlieue parisienne et en province, il retransmet, intact, l’impact d’un show estampille Bashung. Entre fievre et desinvolture, sueur et sophistication. Les anciens titres, comme les plus recents, y prennent une toute nouvelle dimension. Pour certains, il s’agit meme de versions remaniees. Plus percutants, ils tiennent sans faille le choc de la scene et du temps. C’est l’occasion d’apprecier dans la continuite les neologismes savoureux de textes pleins d’invention. Aussi importante que les mots, la voix rocailleuse de Bashung s’en degage comme un instrument a part entiere. Cet album aurait pu être sous-titré « le fantôme de Madame Fambuena », avec Alain Bashung dans le rôle du spectre qui ne peut s’empêcher de hanter les mélomanes vivants. La moitié du groupe Les Valentins – et productrice pour Etienne Daho ou Jacques Higelin – a donc eu la lourde charge d’habiller ces onze titres sortis d’outre-tombe, neuf ans après la mort de l’intéressé. En connaisseuse de l’univers si personnel de Bashung (elle avait travaillé sur l’album Fantaisie militaire en 1998), Edith Fambuena s’est enfermée dans son studio pendant quinze jours, afin de s’adonner à une sorte de séance de spiritisme dont le but était ne surtout pas trahir l’esprit de l’interprète de Vertige de l’amour. Et la première marque de respect de l’album, celle qui frappe d’emblée l’auditeur, c’est la manière dont la voix est mixée, à savoir particulièrement en avant par rapport à la musique. Ainsi, on retrouve avec plaisir l’interprétation si personnelle de Bashung, comme ses décalages rythmiques (« Mortels mortels » dans Immortels, écrite par Dominique A), et surtout ses inflexions à la fois déglinguées, attachantes et tendrement viriles. / This album could have been subtitled “the ghost of Madame Fambuena”, with Alain Bashung in the role of the spectrum that can not help but haunt live music lovers. Half of the Les Valentins group – and producer for Etienne Daho or Jacques Higelin – had the heavy burden to dress these eleven titles from beyond the grave, nine years after the death of the person. As a connoisseur of Bashung’s personal universe (she had worked on the album Fantaisie militaire in 1998), Edith Fambuena locked herself in her studio for a fortnight, in order to indulge in a kind of spiritist session of which the aim was not to betray the spirit of the Vertigo of Love interpreter. And the first mark of respect for the album, the one that immediately strikes the listener, is the way the voice is mixed, especially in front of the music. Thus, one finds with pleasure the very personal interpretation of Bashung, as his rhythmic shifts (“Deadly mortals” in Immortals, written by Dominique A), and especially his inflexions both deranged, endearing and tenderly virile.

On their fourth album The Closer You Get, Alabama gets further away from the country roots and down-home charm responsible for their incredible chart success. One may be surprised at the unusual number of ballads, but popular country in the early ’80s, in hindsight, seems more suited to adult easy listening than country with the popularity of Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gayle, and Dolly Parton. The songwriting is strong, and the vocal harmonies still blend unlike any other country band — in fact, the members of Alabama trade lead vocal roles throughout the album. However, this album suffers from glossy production and the use of synthesizers. The use of a drum machine on the opening title track is nearly unforgivable, and the arrangement distracts the listener from an otherwise good song. However, Alabama shines when they use more traditional country arrangements. Upbeat songs like “Red River” and “Dixieland Delight” are great additions to their catalog and demonstrate how they became one of country’s most successful groups. This is the album that introduced Alabama as one of the biggest hitmaking country/pop bands of the ’80s. The closest thing to country-rock among these ten tracks is the six-minute-and-27-second title track. The earliest representation of the band’s developing sound includes the ballad “Why Lady Why” and the fiddle-heavy “Tennessee River,” both hit singles.
