disappear was born of something that ceased to be, suddenly, unexpectedly, painfully. like two mirrors that reflected too strongly and burst. the shards that were left tell a story. of a trance meeting of an insect and a flower in a self-made paradise and the resulting journey that took them towards new dimensions but was brutally cut short before these could be explored. the sun disappeared. the resulting daze looked back and saw… mirrors don’t reflect what we want to see.

“His ‘n’ Hers” affectionately pits Mr and Mrs O’Higgins against each other as in the movie, Mr & Mrs Smith… In reality, this is a swinging “tough tenors” band in the good humoured tradition of the great Johnny Griffin – Eddie Lockjaw Davis group, who made nine albums together between 1960 and 1962. But what Griffin and Davis did together was not a competition, however apparently combative. It was collaboration, mutual inspiration, and special because of both the similarity and contrast of the two protagonists.

This album brings together two great American jazz pianists, Dave McKenna and Hall Overton, for a one-off session of piano jazz, released in 1960.

Swing pianist McKenna was famous for his powerful left hand approach that often seemed to eliminate the need for a bass player. Overton worked in both classical and jazz as both a composer and pianist, recording with such jazz greats as Stan Getz and Jimmy Raney. He is perhaps best known for his orchestrations of Thelonius Monk’s piano solos.

A virtuoso on the soprano sax, and an innovative composer, Lieb’s attachment to jazz has always been something more than musical. Saxophonist John Coltrane was among the most important and most controversial figures in jazz, recognized as one of the great jazz artists of our time. Recorded June 22, 2007 by the virtuoso saxophonists Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano almost 40 years to the day after Coltrane’s death, this album brilliantly gives homage to the breadth of John Coltrane’s relatively short but momentous musical legacy, featuring pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart. Recorded a decade ago at the legendary Clinton Recording Studios in NYC for the BBC radio show “Something Else”, the newly revealed session celebrates the semi centennial of Coltrane’s passing on July 17, 1967 with a seven-tune repertoire that covers each significant creative stage of Coltrane’s recorded legacy.

To celebrate the Coltrane anniversary, Liebman and Lovano decided that for this particular session they would broaden their scope to include music from all of Coltrane’s musical periods, thus producing a wide-ranging exploration that showcases six distinctive phases of his legacy.
