A lot happened to Motörhead — or more accurately to Motörhead’s once and future leader, Lemmy Kilmister — after the release of 2013’s Aftershock, and most of it wasn’t good. Lemmy, who along with Keith Richards seemed to be the rocker most likely to survive Armageddon (and why hasn’t someone written a comedy where those two chat while foraging for liquor and cigarettes in the wake of World War III?), was abruptly revealed as all too mortal as he found himself struggling with heart trouble, diabetes, and other maladies, and more than a few fans blanched when they saw the widely circulated online video of a weakened Lemmy pacing off stage at the 2013 Wacken Open Air Festival, too frail to complete Motörhead’s set. 2015’s Bad Magic was the first Motörhead album after Lemmy cut back on liquor and tobacco (and had a defibrillator implanted), and returned to the road, and the truth is the mighty frontman sounds older and weaker for the ordeal. That said, it doesn’t hurt as much as you might imagine; on Bad Magic, Lemmy sounds bloodied but unbowed, an ancient soldier who doesn’t know the meaning of surrender and will happily run you through with a sword as he draws his last breath. If Lemmy croaks or wheezes more often on Bad Magic than he has before, it suits his tales of foul-minded bastards and their despicable deeds, and it’s a fine fit with the bloody-minded attitude that has always been Motörhead’s stock in trade. Just as importantly, Lemmy’s bass work remains thunderous, as thick and dirty as it was in his salad days, and guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee continue to bring the noise in inspired fashion. Musically, this album brings very little that’s new to the group’s playbook, but they still sound like Motörhead, something thousands of younger and more agile bands simply cannot do, and if you’re wondering if Motörhead can still kick your butt and blow out your speakers in 2015, the answers are “Hell yeah” and “You know it.” And if the cover of “Sympathy for the Devil” seems an odd way to end this album, if anyone in metal can sound truly convincing as Old Scratch and oddly charming in his pursuit of evil, Lemmy’s in the running, and Bad Magic suggests the man and his band might just be indestructible after all. – Mark Deming

Composers such as Komitas Vardapet, Robert Andreasyan, Georgy Saradjyan, Aram Chatsjatoerjan, Arno Babajanyan and others have used these ancient folk melodies in their compositions and thus the style “Armenian Classical Piano Music” was born.

The music is about the history of the Armenian people, about the joy and about the pain of a true Armenian. It is about the culture, about our traditions, about Armenian landscapes, the mountains and nature and about the Armenia of every day.

Upon listening to Margaret Sohn’s first album under the Miss Grit alias, we had to check that it was indeed this young, New York-based Korean American’s name on the cover, and not Annie Clark’s St. Vincent alias. The resemblance with the latter’s first albums (those guitars on “Like You” and the title track “Follow the Cyborg”) jumps right out, but Miss Grit quickly distinguishes herself from her illustrious elder by opting for a more fictional approach—a sci-fi one, even. With influences spanning films Spike Jonze’s Her, Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, Wong Kar-wai’s Fallen Angels and Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell as well as written works like Jia Tolentino’s Mirror Games: Reflections on Our Illusions and Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto, she approached this album (conceived in isolation during lockdown) with a clear roadmap: “I wanted to place my body in the cyber world, allowing the different variations of my ghost to move about freely. I wanted to look a little freakish, unrecognisable to myself to avoid my instinctive filtration.” The synthetic sounds (reminiscent of new wave or lighter industrial music) in Follow the Cyborg never inhibit the humanity of the singer, who delivers her questions of identity (and not just that of humans) through her fascinating prose. Miss Grit, who grew up in a Michigan suburb before studying music technology at NYU, juggles her fascination for electric guitars (something she certainly has in common with St. Vincent, albeit with less of a prog rock approach) and synthesizers to great effect. With the help of a few friends (Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint, Aron Kobayashi Ritch from Momma and the singer Pearla), she picks up a Qobuzissime with Follow the Cyborg—a record which gets more compelling with every listen. – Marc Zisman

This Hep LP contains the Mills Blue Rhythm Band’s second batch of 15 recordings; all have since been reissued in the Classics CD series. With the addition of altoist Charlie Holmes, the no-name ensemble had its first major soloist. The orchestra was improving during the period, gaining a stronger musical personality, and there was less of an urgency to include insipid singers. Billy Banks does a good job during his three vocals, and such numbers as “Savage Rhythm,” “Snake Hips,” “The Scat Song” and “The Growl” feature some strong ensembles and concise, heated solos.
