Johann Simon Mayr was among the most successful composers prior to Rossini, and while he was long remembered as Donizetti’s teacher his excellent music is now gaining the recognition it deserves. L’accademia di musica is a single-act farsa or comedy, its narrative a variation on the familiar situation of an elderly rich man trying to seduce and marry his young maid and the complications and intrigues that ensue, including “play within a play” and a concert held as part of the opera. With its vaudeville finale and metaphorical touches, this opera simultaneously recalls 18th-century traditions and anticipates Rossini.

The bad-saintly Vitalis is the last of the four operas by Swiss composer Richard Flury (1896-1967). It was premiered in 1963, a year after its completion, and then went unheard until this recording. The plot, based on a novella by Flury’s Swiss compatriot Gottfried Keller, pits cheerful village life against religious intolerance and sexual politics in a disturbing blend of sentimentality and cynicism – though, of course, love triumphs in the end. Flury’s late-Romantic music makes up for the libretto with a steady flow of memorable melodies, engaging solo and choral numbers, and colorful orchestration – and a sense of fun that is never far from the surface.

‘Charm’ is the debut release from Naya Baaz – a groundbreaking new collaboration between two extraordinary musicians, both of whom have achieved a rare level of mastery in demanding musical traditions from opposite sides of the globe. Recent Guggenheim Fellow, Rez Abbasi moved from Karachi to California as a child and has built up a formidable reputation as a guitarist who combines his love of Jazz (evidenced on his last major release, ‘Django-Shift’) with an international array of influences from South Asia and beyond: Josh Feinberg is one of a handful of Western musicians to excel at the challenging legacy of the Hindustani sitar, specializing in the Maihar Gharana style from North India, and also a jazz bass player who studied with Paul Bley and Dave Holland. ‘Josh earnestly understands jazz harmony and chromaticism as well as Indian musical traditions’ says Rez ‘That’s a very rare combination’. Completing the endlessly flexible line-up are Jennifer Vincent’s bespoke five-string cello, opening up possibilities to add both basslines and melodies, and Satoshi Takeishi’s specially augmented drumset.

A composition as brilliant as it is protean – the earliest sections date back to 1724, others were written in 1733 in the hope of obtaining a post in Dresden – the Mass in B minor occupied Bach until the end of his life. The work, which is more ecumenical than strictly Catholic, offers a digest of his art at its expressive peak: a world in itself. It is an understatement to say that the performers on this recording were eager to revisit it, following their acclaimed interpretations of the two Passions and the Christmas Oratorio.

Rui Ribeiro is a Portuguese born composer. Apart from his achievements as a composer, arranger and producer for many prestigious artists in his country, he devotes himself simultaneously to a solo career. His first solo albums Miniatures I (2015), Miniatures II (2019) and Recollections (2020) are presented in a neo-classical aesthetic and set the tone for his subsequent works. The newly released album Miniatures III it’s his fifth studio album and third volume of the “Miniatures” collection, a format that consists of small pieces for solo piano, performed by the composer himself. Rui Ribeiro’s music is strongly influenced by nature and his own lifetime memories. He’s an early bird, Nature lover, and loves both cats and dogs equally. Rihards Pleshanovs reveals about the idea of the album and the choice of content in the program “on the way with the classics” on Latvian Radio 3 “classics”: “the first source of the idea for the program came in 2017. and in exactly the order in which this music is strung on the album. When 2020. a pandemic came in a year – – like everyone else-I decided to realize something new in my profession, because the possibilities for performing concerts were limited. I included retrospective compositions in the album program, to which I occasionally return again. Hence the name – “Les Flexibles” – expresses flexibility towards these pieces and the desire to find something new in them again.”

On her album “Always On My Mind”, which is set to be released by Sony Masterworks on April 28, 2023, Norwegian singer and songwriter Rebekka Bakken reinvents her favourite songs with the sound of atmospheric Scandinavian Pop and Jazz. Together with her band, she adopts classics such as “Yesterday” by Lennon/McCartney, “Here Comes The Flood” by Peter Gabriel or “Why” by Annie Lennox as well as tunes by a new generation of contemporary songwriters like “Break My Heart Again” by Finneas O`Connell. In an intimate band setting with some of Norway’s finest studio musicians, the multi-gold award-winning musician and producer taps into the mystical depths in these songs. Rebekka Bakken skilfully orchestrates the whale-like sounds of guitarist Eivind Aarset with the ethereal organ and synthesizer pads of Jørn Øien and Torjus Vierli and waves them into emotional piano chords, driving bass lines of Tor Egil Kreken and all-acoustic laid-back drum beats of Rune Arnesen. It is this multi-layered soundscape that sets the foundation for the breathtakingly soulful voice of Rebekka Bakken, who has been compared to Janis Joplin.
