The most extraordinary nucleus of the Stradivari Museum is represented by the tools which Antonio Stradivari used to realize his unique masterpieces. These include numerous forms, starting basis for the manufacture of an instrument, which were used to model the ribs and subsequently seal them to the top, bottom and corner-blocks. The forms, usually in walnut and maple, are sometimes accompanied by sets of models in wood or paper, such as, for example, the ones used for the manufacture of the alto Medicean viola or the tenor Medicean viola, the ones used for the making of a violino piccolo, or those used to realize the 1727 twelve string viola d’amore.

When designing his instruments Antonio Stradivari proceeded with extreme meticulousness. Once an instrument had been completed in each of its parts, the set of models that had been used for its realization was marked with a letter of the alphabet, collected and stored up in paper sheet.

The forms for violin exhibited are arranged in chronological order. The first two forms, undated, belong to the period in which Stradivari’s violins showed a clear legacy of Niccolò Amati’s typical style. Simone Ferdinando Sacconi allocated them to the period before 1689. The three successive forms, always according to Sacconi, are also allocated to the period prior to 1689 and they recall the phase following the so called Amati production.

The remaining forms used by Stradivari in the course of his long activity of violin making belong to the years of maturity. These are all dated, with the only exception of the one that Stradivari used to make, along with many other famous violins, the 1715 Cremonese ex Joachim, which is now in the collection “The strings of the Palazzo Comunale of Cremona”. Only three forms for viola are exhibited at the Stradivari Museum: the first one was used for the manufacture of the alto viola of 1672; the second one was used for the alto viola of the 4 October 1690; the third one for the tenor viola also dated 4 October 1690. As far as bassetti and cellos are concerned, no original forms have unfortunately reached us together with the other precious material which is now exhibited

Sophisticated Lady jazz quartet pays homage to the Great Tradition of American jazz but most of their repertoire is written by members of the quartet. Unlike the majority of contemporary jazz recordings, which are carefully and surgically perfected in postproduction, this album remains raw and fresh. These tracks are complete takes, “live to tape,” without editing.

Yarlung recorded this album directly to two tracks of RMGI 468 analog tape running at 15 ips, with no mixer. We used the Hapi converter and Pyramix software from Merging Technologies in Switzerland to make these transfers to DSD. Our sincere thanks to George Klissarov and exaSound for making these releases possible.

“Simpler Times” follows Sophisticated Lady’s highly acclaimed self-titled debut album. The music on this recording is how Sophisticated Lady plays without the help of digital magic. The quartet rehearsed and performed some of these tracks before our recording but at least half are the first time through; the quartet discussed the tunes and who would take what solo in which order but without rehearsal. This is possible when superb musicians tackle new material together, listening carefully to each other and playing as a single organism. Some melodies, played for them on the piano right before our take and the quartet improvised from there. Music cannot get fresher than this.

This album came out of a series of three recording sessions by Sonny Stitt toward the end of 1959, and sees the jazz saxophonist delve into the world of blues. The album blends powerful original songs written by Stitt with a couple of standards that get new life breathed into them. Stitt plays alto sax exclusively on this release, which led to unfair comparisons at the time to Charlie Parker. This album has been out-of-print and almost impossible to find for many years, until now.

Sonny Stitt and Paul Gonsalves – Salt and Pepper (1963/2011) DSF DSD64

This record starts off with one of the underrated gems of the 1960s, an exciting matchup by tenors Sonny Stitt and Paul Gonsalves. This is very much a jam session set, with “Salt And Pepper” being a heated medium-tempo blues and the two competitive tenors stretching out on “S’posin'” and a lengthy “Perdido.” Actually, the most memorable selection from the date is the one on which Stitt switches to alto, “Stardust.” His beautiful playing behind Gonsalves’ warm melody statement raises the session to the classic level. Highly recommended to bebop and straight-ahead jazz fans.

When ‘Willie’ Rice Miller, aka Sonny Boy Williamson, made these intimate, casual recordings in 1963, he was already (probably) 66 years old. Most of his long career was over; only two years later he would die in his little apartment in Helena, Arkansas. He was recognized as a giant throughout the blues world as a harmonica player, vocalist, songwriter, prolific recording artist, live performer and wildly colorful personality. Starting in 1951 and continuing into the ‘60s, Sonny Boy made some of the most influential blues records of all time.

An American blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter, from Mississippi. One of the greatest bluesmen ever. His harp, vocals, and songwriting have never been surpassed. All his records are classics, but this one is truly unique — it’s the cream of two rare, acoustic albums cut in Denmark in 1963. Gentle, personal blues with brilliant harmonica, accompanied by only Matt Guitar Murphy and Memphis Slim on piano. Original LP listed on Stereophile’s Record “2 Die 4” list. Analogue Productions’ SACD transfer presents these recordings in the best possible audio quality.

Although the symphonies, string quartets and concertos represent the core of his achievement, Shostakovich had wide sympathies across the musical spectrum: hence his oft-repeated comment that he enjoyed all music from Bach to Offenbach. All the works on this disc – which opens with a suite from the ballet The Bolt and concludes with his orchestration of Tea for Two – attest to a composer who entered into the spirit of ‘light music’ with enjoyment and enthusiasm. The so-called Jazz Suite No.2 (sketches for the original Jazz Suite No.2 have only recently been discovered) is in fact the Suite for Stage Variety Orchestra, drawn from various ballet, film and theatres scores, with saxophones and accordion to the fore. The Second Waltz, recently found popularity as the title music for Stanley Kubrick’s last film, “Eyes Wide Shut”.

Still, Chambers is careful not to pull too much attention away from his sidemen. Gary Bartz is electrifying throughout, and Eric Reed shines on piano.
