Various Artists – 2L The Nordic Sound – Audiophile Reference Recordings (2009)
SACD Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 / 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 1:18:02 minutes | 4.19 GB
Genre: Classical | Publisher (label): 2L 2L-RR1-SACD

2L’s 2-disc set includes materials over which audiophiles could sit & argue for hours, if not longer. Each disc contains the same 19 musical selections taken from their growing, broad selection of recordings ranging from Mozart & Vivaldi to Schoenberg, Carter & beyond. The goal, presumably, is to make an argument for the superiority of surround sound not just for movies, but for music as well. Disc 1 is a hybrid SACD with 3 separate audio tracks: DSD Stereo, DSD 5.1 channel surround, & standard redbook. The 2nd disc is a Blu-ray disc again presenting 3 audio formats: 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio, 5.1 channel 24bit Linear PCM, & 2ch 24bit Linear PCM. Two discs, 19 tracks, & 6 different audio formats to choose from; what’s an audiophile to do? There can be little question that 3 surround options, whether on Blu-ray or SACD, offer a far more pleasing listening experience; the level of detail & realism offered in these formats vastly exceeds the 2ch tracks. But even between the surround options, there are differences. There are some tracks, such as the excerpts from Britten’s “Simple” Symphony & Bartуk’s Sonata for Solo Violin, where the SACD surround track offers a much cleaner, more detailed accounting. However, the sense of truly being in the centre of a live performance of Islandmoen’s Requiem or Haydn’s Op. 76/5, String Quartet that is achieved on the Blu-ray with DTS-HD cannot be improved upon. The decision, then, comes down to the preference of individual listeners. Maybe even more than that, however, is the practicality of using Blu-ray as an audio-only format. Sure, there’s a sharp-looking menu that listeners can use to navigate the disc, but that still seems like a bit of a waste of Blu-ray’s vast storage capacity. DVD-A was a format that was even less popular/accepted than SACD, so it will be interesting to see if Blu-ray Audio catches on.

FEATURING SMASH HITS: “Just Once” and “One Hundred Ways”

“The Dude is a Quincy Jones solo project in name, but this post-disco pop-soul cornucopia of groove resonates as a testament to his ear for anticipating new sounds.” -Pitchfork

“… a cross-cultural success blending jazz, Latin music, soul ballads, and straight pop … The Dude is an outstanding collection that was massively influential on the ’80s R&B scene.” – AllMusic

Intervention Records is thrilled to introduce you to the newest release in its (Re)Discover Series, Quincy Jones’ 1981 visionary masterpiece “The Dude” on hybrid CD/SACD (catalog number IR-SCD18; UPC 707129301611).

Legendary over decades as a composer, producer and performer, Quincy Jones changed the face of pop music in the early 1980s. A commercial and critical smash, “The Dude” is the album Jones released in between producing Michael Jackson’s 1979 breakthrough “Off the Wall” and 1982’s monster follow-up “Thriller,” the best-selling non-compilation of all time.

“The Dude’s” lineup of writers and players is a staggering who’s who of 70s and 80s pop and R&B, including Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson, James Ingram, Patti Austin and more. 3 Singles from the album charted in the US Top 40, including the smash hits “Just Once” and “One Hundred Ways.”

“The Dude” was nominated for 12 Grammy Awards, winning for Best Instrumental Arrangement, Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Instrumental Arrangement. James Ingram’s vocal performances from “The Dude” earned him 3 of his own Grammy nominations and a win for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for One Hundred Ways.”

“The Dude” is mastered direct-to-DSD by Kevin Gray at CoHEARent Audio from the Original Analog Master Tapes, which were acquired from Quincy’s team by Marshall Blonstein of Audio Fidelity. Coming from the tail end of the 100% analog era, “The Dude” is an AMAZING recording, and Intervention’s remastering by Kevin Gray brings the big, beautifully nuanced bass home with authority and bounce, while providing the kind of 3D imaging and sonic holography of the best audiophile recordings. The is a sonic sensation!

Quincy Jones “The Dude” appears on Intervention Records solely due to the generosity of Marshall Blonstein of Audio Fidelity. Marshall blazed a bright, inspiring trail for labels like IR for many years with his brands, Digital Compact Classics (DCC) and Audio Fidelity.

When Audio Fidelity closed its doors in 2018 “The Dude” was already mastered by Kevin Gray and the DSD files were in the can with nowhere to go. Kevin acted as a facilitator, connecting IR with Marshall, who provided the mastered DSD files for this release. Thank you Marshall!

Krystian Zimerman, Sir Simon Rattle, and Ludwig van Beethoven: three exceptional musicians and five great piano concertos are brought together for a landmark recording. This release is among the highlights to conclude our Beethoven anniversary celebrations.

Over 30 years ago, in 1989, Krystian Zimerman and Leonard Bernstein recorded Beethoven’s Piano Concertos Nos. 3, 4 and 5. They were united in their total dedication to music – in mind, heart and soul – resulting in an exceptional recording. Sadly, Bernstein died before the cycle was recorded in completion. Zimerman went on to conduct the remaining Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 from the keyboard in 1991. Now, 30 years after his first recordings, Zimerman returns to Beethoven’s Piano Concertos. He offers an exceptional new interpretation recorded with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Recording all five of Beethoven’s piano concertos during the pandemic was “like chamber music on a great scale“, as Krystian Zimerman tells Apple Music. Read on in the editor’s notes and listen to this album in Apple Music.

The album is available for download & streaming (including in Dolby Atmos), as a 3-CD digipack, 5-LP vinyl box, and as an exclusive and limited edition of the 5-LP vinyl-box with a signed booklet by Krystian Zimerman.

This is the world premiere recording of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in its original version. There are a few different notes and phrasing bowings than in what is usually played. The most obvious audible difference is that the complete second movement is played with mute, while it has become a tradition that the violinist take the mute off for the second theme and therefore for most of that movement. This was never intended by Tchaikovsky. The work is the coming back to life and light, a work of positiveness. His music was strongly connected to his personal life. Linus Roth has played the piece for twenty years and feels confident to record his unique interpretation. Shostakovich’s Second Violin Concerto is a late work by the composer who at that time was already ill and knew that his life would soon be over. The conductor of the recording, Thomas Sanderling, was a close friend of his and remembers him well in his late years. Clearly this is not a funny piece, but tha

Writing in prose as delirious as his playing, Yevgeny Sudbin speaks in his accompanying nine-page essay of the incomprehension that greeted Scriabin’s half-crazed genius in both Russia and the West. I should add that America, too, was similarly baffled, reminding us that there are those who think “that the air is filled with green monkeys with crimson eyes and sparkling tails, a kind of ecstasy that is sold in Russia at two roubles a bottle”. This is entirely apt and, laying my cards firmly on the table, I should say that no pianist of any generation has, in my experience, captured Scriabin’s volatility so vividly as Sudbin.

In his choice of sonatas (ranging through Scriabin’s early, middle and late periods), his mix of drama and introspection are positively alchemic and entirely his own. It is as if the music’s very nerve ends are exposed to view and rarely have I heard a pianist prepared to take such risks on record. He takes virtuosity to the very edge at the end of the Fifth Sonata and his daredevil aplomb is at its height in the Ninth, suitably named Black Mass Sonata.

How he varies the colour, light and shade in the early D sharp minor Etude so that its familiar heroic octaves sound newly minted and never merely frenetic! His selection of Mazurkas is given with a breathtaking subtlety, making you long to hear him in Chopin, while his response to Scriabin’s command in the Fifth Sonata, presto tumultuoso esaltato, is like the vortex of a whirlwind.

All these performances are flecked with personal touches and brilliances above and beyond even Scriabin’s wildest demands. Finally, BIS captures Sudbin’s astonishing range of colours and sonorities, ranging from the utmost delicacy to an enraged uproar, in crystalline demonstration sound. This, put suitably euphorically, is a disc in a million.
