Jerry Goldsmith’s remarkable 78/79 season saw the composer tackle a series of major movies with diverse subject matters and complement each of them with equally diverse and impressive scores. Amongst the thrillers, sci-fi, horror and drama came a hugely enjoyable period caper; The Great Train Robbery. A lighted hearted romp through Victorian England, directed by Michael Crichton, based on his book. Varése Sarabande have produced a welcome re-issue of this delightful Jerry Goldsmith score, presenting it as a multi channel SACD, though often lacking the dynamics and vibrancy of the Memoir CD, and elevated it to deluxe edition status by including extra music too, though sadly this is not the complete score. Apart from minor omissions, the key missing cue is of course Dead Willy, the music that accompanies Clean Willy as he is chased and then killed for betraying Pierce to the Police, oddly absent from the 24 track masters used here.

The score for any Star Trek film relies heavily upon the introduction of the classic eight-note motif that has shadowed the pop culture phenomenon since its arrival on the big screen in 1979. For Star Trek: Nemesis, the series’ tenth installment, Jerry Goldsmith delivers the theme with all of the pomp one could hope for on the rousing “Remus.” What follows is a fairly typical yet immensely enjoyable sci-fi soundtrack, filled with pounding dissonance, wonder, and the occasional moment of tender camaraderie — the quietly powerful “Ideals” — that one would expect from this legendary saga and composer.

Jennifer Warnes – The Well (2001) [Reissue 2005] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Jennifer Warnes – The Well (2001) [Reissue 2005]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 53:33 minutes | Scans included | 2,16 GB
or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Full Scans included | 1,06 GB

Jennifer Warnes became a household name in the ’70s with her hit “Right Time of the Night” and scored equally big with the Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley on “The Time of My Life” from the film Dirty Dancing. She also wowed critics and fans alike with Famous Blue Raincoat, her album of Leonard Cohen songs. In all, she’s sold over 35 million records worldwide, but she’s hardly a household word in the post-Madonna world. Warnes has returned to the recording scene for the first time since 1992 with The Well, a collection ten songs co-produced with Martin Davich. And what a collection it is. As a singer and a songwriter, Warnes knows her strengths well. She understates lyrics and musical phrases as a way of getting them to open up on their own through her gorgeously wrought singing. She’s no acrobat; she doesn’t reach for the note that breaks the pitch-meter. Instead, she allows her voice to come up from the heart of the lyric she’s singing. She wears the song and allows the song to adorn her as well, whether plaintively, as on the title track, one of her co-writes with Texas legend Doyle Bramhall, or her lilting, haunting, spiritual tome “Prairie Melancholy.” When doing takes on the songs of others, such as Tom Waits’ nugget “Invitation to the Blues,” she imbues them with the soft, bluesy swing inherent in the original, but adds depth and dimension with her dry, reportorial storytelling (with fine guitar work from Doyle Bramhall). The songs on The Well seem spare and open, layered lightly, and full of room for Warnes’ warm voice to reveal the wealth of emotions in the tunes themselves. But what’s interesting is without it being noticeable to the listener, there are small but lush string sections, a few horns here and there, and a full-on four-piece rock band. Her reading of Billy Joel’s “So It Goes” is virtually a reinvention of the song. She offers this song from a heart that has been cracked enough times, to paraphrase her friend Cohen, that it has been flooded with light. But it’s the songs with Bramhall that are the masterpieces here; they reveal the subtle, bluesy textures of Texas and the strength in expressing one’s vulnerability to forces one does not understand, such as on “The Panther.” As if to underline the evidence, there is a vocal duet between them on Eddy Arnold’s country swing gem “You Don’t Know Me” that rivals Ray Charles’ version for pure, expressive passion. With her stunning rendition of Arlo Guthrie’s “Patriot’s Dream,” she is backed by a folk music symphony orchestra, with Guthrie himself lending a guest vocal as well as Blondie Chaplin and Kenny Edwards, with a Carmen accordion appearance by Van Dyke Parks. The set ends with a piano trio reprise of the title track that wraps all the magic up into a circle, as if these songs were a cycle of mystery, sensuality, and imagination from the very beginning. And, of course they were; Warnes isn’t capable of anything less. Welcome back, Jennifer Warnes; you’ve been missed.

It took Jennifer Warnes five years to construct a follow-up to Famous Blue Raincoat, and she still wasn’t able to come up with a unifying concept as simple and workable as recording a set of songs by Leonard Cohen. She did find some excellent covers, including Todd Rundgren’s “Pretending To Care” and The Waterboys’ “The Whole Of The Moon,” that may have been new to her listeners, and she got a song from Donald Fagen (“Big Noise, New York”). She also did some of her own writing, and got participation from Cohen on “Way Down Deep.” All of which is to say that there are some worthy selections on The Hunter, but on the whole, this record doesn’t match its illustrious predecessor.

Jennifer Lopez’s debut album, On the 6, showcases the actress’ sultry, versatile voice in a number of settings, including pop ballads, Latin pop, and R&B. Star producers like Sean “Puffy” Combs, Trackmasters, and Emilio Estefan, Jr. lend their talents to the album, making On the 6 a perfectly polished and varied album, which features a musical blend Lopez calls “Latin soul.” Smooth ballads such as “Should’ve Never,” “Too Late,” “Could This Be Love,” and “No Me Ames,” a duet with Latin superstar Marc Anthony, dominate the album’s first half; while these songs show off the gentler side of Lopez’s vocal gifts, they tend to sound too similar. It’s on the R&B and Latin-tinged tracks where Lopez really shines. Along with the insistent first single “If You Had My Love,” cuts like “Feelin’ So Good” and “Let’s Get Loud” have a fiery, soulful sound more in keeping with Lopez’s public persona. On the 6’s second half capitalizes on this spicy, upbeat side, particularly on “Waiting for Tonight” and “Open off My Love,” which draws inspiration from rap, R&B, and Latin styles with its sparse arrangement of horns, keyboards, and beats. The tropical remix of “No Me Ames” and “Una Noche Mas,” the Spanish version of “Waiting for Tonight,” emphasize Lopez’s distinctive heritage, which elevates On the 6 from a star’s vanity project to an individual but accessible work of pop songcraft by a widely talented performer.

Jen Chapin, the daughter of the late folksinger Harry Chapin, has performed many styles of music and is not one to be easily classified. She is not the first artist to explore the music of Stevie Wonder in a jazz setting, nor is she the first vocalist to do so. But her stripped-down settings utilizing her husband Stephan Crump on bass and saxophonist Chris Cheek are striking, because they omit keyboards entirely and effectively blend pop, soul, and jazz into music that should be accessible to a wide variety of listeners. Chapin also skips over the Wonder compositions favored by jazz artists, opening with the funky “You Haven’t Done Nothin’,” in which Crump adds some percussion by tapping the body of his bass while Cheek’s sonorous baritone provides a perfect foil for the leader’s hip vocals. The sparse instrumental backing also works beautifully in her treatment of the reggae piece “Master Blaster (Jammin’).” Chapin saunters over the infectious bassline of “Village Ghetto Land,” with Cheek’s playful soprano dancing around her delicious vocal, while she captures the sassy attitude of “Big Brother” perfectly. Jen Chapin’s spirit of adventure is to be applauded in an age when too many singers either restrict themselves to safe standards or songbooks of all too frequently recorded works.

Controversial at the time, delayed because of fights with the record company over lyrical content and the original title (Volunteers of America), Volunteers was a powerful release that neatly closed out and wrapped up the ’60s. Here, the Jefferson Airplane presents itself in full revolutionary rhetoric, issuing a call to “tear down the walls” and “get it on together.” “We Can Be Together” and “Volunteers” bookend the album, offering musical variations on the same chord progression and lyrical variations on the same theme. Between these politically charged rock anthems, the band offers a mix of words and music that reflect the competing ideals of simplicity and getting “back to the earth,” and overthrowing greed and exploitation through political activism, adding a healthy dollop of psychedelic sci-fi for texture. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen’s beautiful arrangement of the traditional “Good Shepherd” is a standout here, and Jerry Garcia’s pedal steel guitar gives “The Farm” an appropriately rural feel. The band’s version of “Wooden Ships” is much more eerie than that released earlier in the year by Crosby, Stills & Nash. Oblique psychedelia is offered here via Grace Slick’s “Hey Frederick” and ecologically tinged “Eskimo Blue Day.” Drummer Spencer Dryden gives an inside look at the state of the band in the country singalong “A Song for All Seasons”. The musical arrangements here are quite potent. Nicky Hopkins’ distinctive piano highlights a number of tracks, and Kaukonen’s razor-toned lead guitar is the recording’s unifying force, blazing through the mix, giving the album its distinctive sound. Although the political bent of the lyrics may seem dated to some, listening to Volunteers is like opening a time capsule on the end of an era, a time when young people still believed music had the power to change the world.
