Tine Thing Helseth performs the four pieces featured on this her debut recording with natural spontaneity and a unique quality of sound, interpreting the most famous of these the Haydn concerto with authority and a phenomenal variation of colour in her sound. Alongside the internationally acclaimed Norwegian Chamber Orchestra she presents a reading that sets a new standard for this concerto. The music is captured in transparent and brilliant Hybrid SACD sound (and plays on all CD players) in Jar church, Oslo.
Born in 1987, Tine belongs to a new generation of Norwegian soloists and indeed a new generation of brass soloists all together, who are more influenced by the idiom of string players and singers than used to be the case. Tine’s approach to music is refreshingly focused and straightforward – with an extra touch of artistic magic that reaches everyone who hears her playing. Her studies with Arnulf Naur Nilsen of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra have further strengthened her natural abilities as a performer and communicator.
In 2006 Tine was awarded 2nd Prize in the 2006 Eurovision Young Musicians finale in Vienna. Her fresh, effortless and musical playing amazed and exited both audience and jury. Orchestras and conductors responded immediately to this extraordinary talent, resulting in a number of appearances as soloist with orchestras both in Europe and in Asia.

The Jazz Suites with the addition of 2 overtures and a hymn on SACD. Both Suites date from the 1930’s and enjoy a huge popularity. Especially the second Waltz from the first Suite has become widely known through the arrangement by violinist and “Stehgeiger” André Rieu. The Overture on Russian and Kirghiz Folk Themes was written to celebrate the centenary of the incorporation of Kirghizia into Russia. On the same patriotic note is a short hymn to the port on the Black Sea, the Novorossisk chimes. The Ukrainian Orchestra under Theodore Kuchar gives excellent, idiomatic performances.

Krystian Zimerman’s Chopin is big. He plays this music with a great dynamic range and huge contrasts, with little of the shading we love in Rubinstein’s Chopin. Except for the Barcarolle, these are pretty big pieces, so Zimerman doesn’t exactly overwhelm the music. It’s just very 20th- century Chopin, not on the composer’s original scale, but not badly done either. I think this disc would sound a lot better in a large listening room than in a small one, however (or in your car). The recording is too close up; we could have used more distance from the piano. –Leslie Gerber
