In the late 80s and early 90s, Jazz Alley was an annual stop for Mongo Santamaria and his band. Their appearance was an event that never disappointed. Someone at Concord Jazz, Mongo’s label at the time, had the really bright idea of recording them live at that venue in March 1990. The band itself is an all-star lineup, including such luminaries as Ray Vega, Bobby Porcelli, Bob Quaranta, Johnny Almendra, Mitch Frohman, Eddie Rodriguez and Bernie Minoso.

Ramon “Mongo” Santamaria was an Afro-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist. He is most famous for being the composer of the jazz standard “Afro Blue”, recorded by John Coltrane among others. In 1950 he moved to New York where he played with Perez Prado, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Fania All Stars, etc. He was an integral figure in the fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with R&B and soul, paving the way for the boogaloo era of the late 1960s. His 1963 hit rendition of Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. His album Mambo Mongo was released on Chesky Records in 1993.

Bohuslav Martinů’s distinctive musical voice, which infuses the great Czech tradition with modern idioms, is showcased in this captivating survey of his concertante works, performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille conducted by Lawrence Foster. The Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra is a lively and rhythmic tour de force. Breezily energetic and relentless, it is full of jazzy inflections and high speed fireworks, pausing only in the tranquillity of the slow movement for moments of serene calm. By contrast, the Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra is a warm, lyrical work in the Romantic tradition. With its intricate and interweaving solo lines, expansive melodies and dance-like syncopations it’s an engaging work of considerable charm which deserves a wider audience. The Rhapsody-Concerto for Viola and Orchestra is a dreamily nostalgic work whose simple melodies, radiant lyricism and soaring viola line make it one of the 20th century’s most performed viola concertos.

This album joins Space Music with Synth-Pop in a very imaginative manner, which proves why the artist succeeded in becoming a musical visionary at a time when shaping risky concepts of sound was by no means as technologically easy as it is now. Kaske, who since then has been developing an intense musical career in various recording projects as well as being the author of soundtracks and music for television advertisements, displays an excellent combination of artistic creativity and mastery in his skills with the electronic medium, which means in fact that this work is a true jewel for the lovers of innovative electronic music, with a remarkable beauty, while at the same time avoiding arid experimentation or commercial formulae which are repeated ad nauseam.

This SACD is a sonic journey, made for dark rooms and friends sitting around with the music taking the listener to other worlds, realms and alternate universes. The sound is superb though the booklet shows no images. There is an excellent sense of space though it is hard to tell what is actual studio space and artificial reverb. Please do not take these comments to be a negative as the sound is fine!! I have to be honest and state that I know nothing about the composer. However, I had decided to now check out his previous releases as I loved 98% of the music on the disc and I look forward to hearing some of the composer’s music. A fund disc with some great sounds and great musicians.

Rock With Me Baby is the comforting addition to this awesome, down-home blues artist’s sparsely-documented career. A fire that cannot be faked or accurately imitated fuels each note and puts this title in perfect fit with APO Records’ mission of finding “the real blues”. Recently deceased at 81 years old, Little Hatch is a little-known legend; little-known, that is, outside of Kansas City, where his birthday was long ago declared “Little Hatch Day” and where harp up-and-comers actively pay homage to the master.

With APO’s release of yet another superior collection of contemporary blues recordings, it’s clear that special things are happening at a converted cathedral in Salina, Kansas, called Blue Heaven Studios. One day, while APO artist Jimmie Lee Robinson was laying down his impressive legacy for the ace release “Remember Me”, a scarcely recorded Kansas City harmonica legend named Provine Hatch, known as “Little Hatch”, walked in with his wife for a look. After Hatch was asked to cut loose in spectacular fashion with tape rolling, guitar wizard Bill Nye was enlisted to fan the flames. Little Hatch proceeded to record the songs for “Goin’ Back”, mostly in single takes. Check out “She’s Nineteen Years Old” to hear a fine renewal of the Muddy Waters classic; “The Sky Is Crying” for his creative revisitation of Elmore James; and his superlative version of Jimmy Reed’s “You Don’t Have to Go”.

During his stay in the French capital, the German poet Heinrich Heine wrote a series of articles for the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, entitled “Musikalische Saison in Paris” (= musical season in Paris). These articles still make for fascinating reading, with Heine providing a highly ironic and personal account of musical life in Paris. And, of course, he repeatedly dealt with composer Franz Liszt. This was again the case in the article devoted to the year 1841. That year, Liszt had given two piano recitals based on the music of Beethoven. Heine writes the following: “Despite his genius, Liszt meets with opposition here in Paris, which usually consists of serious musicians and crowns his rival, the imperial Thalberg, with laurels. – Liszt has already given two concerts in which he has played all by himself, against all tradition, without involving other artists. He is now preparing a third concert in honour of Beethoven. This composer must indeed appeal most to the taste of someone like Liszt.”

One of the great originals in the jazz hierarchy, Lester Young was without doubt the most influential tenor saxophonist after Coleman Hawkins. A highly sensitive, graceful player, and an enigmatic personality, Young had a winning sense of time and space and a most engaging gift for improvising on songs rather than chord sequences. He played with great feeling for the lyric of a song with a very special, bittersweet brand of melancholy. There are some jazz exponents whose recorded work is worth preservation and close attention. Lester is one such jazz exponent. 2xHD are proud to bring present this historic recording to the digital high resolution world.

This release sees a selection of the 1975 recordings made in Copenhagen by legendary alto sax player Lee Konitz and tenor sax player Warne Marsh reissued in high-resolution digital quality. Both students of Lennie Tristano, these cool jazz kings weave magical, meandering melodic lines that delighted the fans who brought Konitz and Marsh to Denmark and undoubtedly continue to entrance listeners today. Clearly, Konitz & Marsh had by this stage of their respective careers taken their interest in music to a point which for the time at least was scarce amongst jazz musicians. It is amazing music from the two Lennie Tristano pupils.

This New York session, with Ted Brown, holds some pleasant surprises.
