Franz Schreker (originally Schrecker, March 23, 1878 – March 21, 1934) was an Austrian composer, conductor, teacher and administrator. Primarily a composer of operas, his style is characterized by aesthetic plurality (a mixture of Romanticism, Naturalism, Symbolism, Impressionism, Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit), timbral experimentation, strategies of extended tonality and conception of total music theatre into the narrative of 20th-century music.

The opera was first performed on 27 March 1924 at the Stadttheater Köln, conducted by Otto Klemperer. Productions in a further seven cities followed (including Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Leipzig), but critical response was mixed and, together with changing audience tastes and the complexity of the score, the work failed to maintain its place in the repertoire.

The first production in modern times was at the Bielefeld Opera in 1985. The work was also staged at the Vienna Volksoper in 2004 and at the Bonn Opera in 2010. Wikipedia

This final instalment in this complete recording of Gabriel Fauré’s chamber music features his compositions for violin and piano. Eric Le Sage and Daishin Kashimoto, concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, give us a particularly convincing and moving interpretation of these intimist works, thanks to a complicity polished in the course of numerous collaborations in concert.

Gabriel Fauré was 30 when he began his first violin sonata in the summer of 1875. Not until four decades later, when he was director of the Paris Conservatoire, would he get round to a second sonata. More than an anthological disc, the present volume paints the portrait of a life, bearing witness to the change in civilization between the waning 19th century and the coming upheavals of the 20th.

This last volume brings to a close a complete recording of reference, based on Eric Le Sage’s capacity for federating first-rank artists around him. This original approach was hailed by the international critics for his first complete recording, devoted to Schumann.

In a genre set by Boccherini and represented in the nineteenth century by the masterpieces of Schumann, Brahms and Franck, Gabriel Fauré composed two scores that were very different from his early romances and the evanescent ‘lullaby ofdeath’ that is the Requiem. The Piano Quintet op. 89 remains little known, for reasons related to its composition as much as to its history. Regarded by Koechlin a some of Fauré’s finest work, it serves as a transition to the composer’s final stylistic period. Opus 115, surprisingly less melancholy than its predecessor, is one ofthe composer’s last productions. In the evening of his life Faure demonstrated his supreme mastery and prodigious creative power, giving French chamber music, which he served so well, one of its finest monuments.

The international artist Eric Le Sage, who is a specialist in this repertoire, continues his exploration of the complete chamber music with piano of Gabriel Fauré, accompanied by a fine team of first-rate artists. This second volume, expertly recorded by Jean-Marc Laisné in the wonderful setting of the MC2 Auditorium in Grenoble, shows extraordinary energy and elegance. This series in general and its first volume in particular, constitute a milestone in Alpha’s development as they are the first of a line devoted to music from the post-Mozart period. Each volume will be placed in the literary context of the time in which it was created through fragments taken from novels, poems or the correspondence of artists. Eric Le Sage will work on this series together with François Salque with whom he shares a great musical affinity. Sound engineer Jean-Marc Laisné (who recorded the integral works of Schumann) will record the pieces in the auditorium of Grenoble, a hall famous for its acoustics. “The compositions on this album, played by the Gabor Varga Jazz Trio – unlike the previous albums – were not born on a piano but on a ‘Rhodes Mark I. Stage Piano’. This is a kind of immersion into the vintage world of the sixties. It’s not so much jazz, but rather an archaic fusion, in which the widely used keyboards of the rock bands of the era build a tight unit with the Jazz rhythm section.

Songs, composed in a simple and harmonious sounding, almost popular style, were robbed of their improvisational performance. Was there something like that before? Yes, of course. Exactly the same? Definitely not.

Because this is the music of the Gabor Varga Jazz Trio” (Gabor Varga)

Wonderful work from guitarist Gabor Szabo – a record that really helped to shift his sound and style into the 70s! The groove here is often open and free – taking off from some of the exoticism of Gabor’s 60s albums on Impulse and Skye, but with a bit more of the CTI electric groove – thanks to arrangements from Bob James, who also plays keyboards on the set! The mix of Gabor’s exotic tones and the deeper groove of CTI is a surprisingly great blend – and really helps to open up the guitarist’s sound for a whole new generation. Drums are by Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette, who’s especially funky on the great track “Thirteen” – and titles also include a great cover of “Summer Breeze”, and the cuts “Mizrab”, and “Concerto”.

Here, Gabor Szabo ambitiously pairs his outstanding quintet (featuring Jimmy Stewart) with Gary McFarland’s subtle string and horn arrangements in a collection of originals, pop covers, and classical reinterpretations. The result is a sort of accessible third-stream music. Szabo has many fine moments, and provides nice spaces for the beautiful guitar solos of Jimmy Stewart.

After recording four albums for Impulse in 1967, the distinctive guitarist Gabor Szabo cut three records for the Skye label in 1968, of which this LP, Bacchanal, is the strongest. Szabo’s regular group of the era is heard on record for the last time: guitarist Jimmy Stewart, bassist Louis Kabok, drummer Jim Keltner and percussionist Hal Gordon. With the exception of two Szabo originals, the material is comprised of current pop tunes including two songs by Donovan, “Love Is Blue,” “The Look of Love” and “Theme from the Valley of the Dolls.” Despite what should have been a complete lack of potential, the Hungarian guitarist uplifts the material and mostly turns the pieces into worthwhile jazz.
