Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the survival drama Adrift. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award nominee Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) (Lion, Patrick Melrose, Gunpowder, The Current War). Adrift is directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, 2 Guns) and stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. The movie tells the true story of Tami Oldham, who, after being knocked unconscious by the largest hurricane in the history of the Pacific Ocean, awakens to find her fiancé badly injured, their boat in ruins, and no means of communication or navigation. Following triumphs that included the imaginative experiments of 2017’s What If and his scores for the films Adrift and The Current War, Hauschka’s Volker Bertelmann makes his Sony Classical debut with A Different Forest, an album that exemplifies his talent at creating a sense of place with his music. Instead of the prepared piano that is usually at the heart of most Hauschka albums, Bertelmann uses pure piano to reflect the eternal beauty of the woods. However, A Different Forest is very much a piece with the rest of his work, echoing the searching feel of What If, the tender melodies of Ferndorf, and the musical landscapes of Abandoned City. Bertelmann begins the album with “Hike,” a piece whose winding, contemplative melody feels organic and inviting; much like a walk in the woods, its ebb and flow lets listeners give themselves over to the rhythms of nature. In Bertelmann’s hands, these rhythms are ever-changing. True to its name, “Urban Forest” is linear, percussive, and modern-feeling; “Hands in the Anthill” rises and falls on itself in intricate patterns. A Different Forest’s moods are just as complex, spanning the effortless grace of “Dew and Spiderwebs” and “Skating Through the Woods,” the sunny “Daybreak Over Covent Garden,” and more somber moments such as “Talking to My Father” and “Woodworkers.” By the time A Different Forest ends with “Another Hike,” it’s clear that this is a serene, thought-provoking album that grows richer with each listen. ~ Heather Phares

“Since my first encounter with the Hathor Consort, it has been obvious to me that the sound of the viola da gamba complements the harmonic and melodic style of my compositions wonderfully well and with utter naturalness. The pieces on Aries Point therefore not only combine two musical eras, but also give the sound color of the viola da gamba a central place as a key compositional element. It’s unique timbre influences the process of composition and improvisation and resonates in a completely new musical context. It’s subtle intensity brings out textures which, in their turn, inspire jazz musicians to adopt new forms of melodic and sonic expression in the course of their improvisations. With the world premiere recording of a rediscovered Stabat Mater, a late work by the Bohemian master František Tůma, Pluto-Ensemble and Hathor Consort expand the Baroque discography with an emotionally gripping work. The version presented here, one of Tůma’s five settings of the text, long lay forgotten in the Abbey library in Ottobeuren, until Marnix De Cat (artistic director of the Pluto-Ensemble) rediscovered this gem. It is heard here with the Requiem in F minor by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and instrumental works by Biber, his teacher Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and his Salzburg colleague Andreas Christoph Clamer. Animam gementem cano (‘I hymn the grieving soul’ – the first two words quote the Stabat Mater text) takes us on a journey through many of life’s most significant moments: we are confronted with life and death, but also with our personal path towards consciousness. Pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali was a local Philadelphia legend who had an impact on John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner and many others. He took the larger jazz world by storm in 1965 when was released on Atlantic Records. The label was so impressed, they set Ibn Ali up to record his own album later that year, but it was never mixed or released. Thirteen years later, the tapes went up in flames in a New Jersey warehouse. While the sessions were thought lost forever, copies were believed to exist. And they did! Once located and the audio restored, the acclaimed 2021 release of Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album finally saw the light of day.

Zimmer’s multi-award winning career reaches back to the mid-eighties and he has developed close working relationships with renowned directors such as Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Michael Bay, Ron Howard, Gore Verbinski and Christopher Nolan. His credits include some of the biggest blockbuster movies of all time along with acclaimed TV series such as The Crown and Planet Earth II. This concert was filmed on 7th May 2016 in Prague during Hans Zimmer’s hugely successful European concert tour. Hans was accompanied by a band, orchestra and choir, 72 musicians in total, including guitarist Johnny Marr. The staging was spectacular with a ground breaking light show, stunning visuals and a state of the art sound system. Hans Zimmer performs on multiple instruments and gives introductory insights to many of the pieces during the concert.
This year Hans Zimmer has toured across Europe and he takes his show to North America this Summer. I Do!” as well as “Celebration” and a host of others. But what many people don’t know is that in addition to being a wonderful composer and a professional visual artist as well, Schmidt was a brilliant pianist with his own inimitable style. Mason himself was eventually nicknamed the “Chameleon” for his ability to perform so many styles of music.
