The brand new feature-length concert documentary “Home Again: Carole King Live In Central Park,” which presents musical icon Carole King’s triumphant May 26, 1973 homecoming concert on The Great Lawn of New York City’s Central Park before an estimated audience of 100,000, will premiere January 19 at New York’s IFC Film Center via Abramorama. The film will then be released wide on February 9 (also King’s birthday) streaming exclusively on The Coda Collection. Directed by George Scott and produced by Lou Adler and John McDermott, the film presents the complete multi-camera 16mm footage filmed and recorded by Adler in 1973 but never before released.

Für seine dritte CD bei NEOS hat Martin Herchenröder verschiedene Werke für Flöten und Saiteninstrumente zusammengestellt. In der Mitte steht »The Tempest« für Flöte und Gitarre (1992), ein »imaginäres Theater nach William Shakespeare«. Darin zeigt sich zum einen Herchenröders tiefe Verwurzelung in der europäischen Kulturgeschichte, die sich auch in profunder Schulung an der Musiktradition niederschlägt, und zum anderen seine Offenheit für literarische Inspirationsquellen, die er in autonome Klänge transformiert. Sämtliche Werke erklingen in Ersteinspielungen. Neben erstklassigen Interpreten wirkt Martin Herchenröder selbst als Pianist und Organist mit.

Scriabin composed most of his single-movement fourth symphony The Poem of Ecstasy between 1905 and 1908 in Italy and France. He originally intended it to be called Poème orgiaque (‘Orgiastic Poem’) with its unprecedented raw sensuality and overpowering aesthetic, taking chromaticism beyond even Wagnerian voluptuousness. His earlier Symphony No. 2 in C minor adopts César Franck’s cyclical ideas to which Scriabin layered sweeping climaxes, majestic intensity and rich orchestral colour that enliven its five movements with ceaseless invention.

This is a live recording of a 1980 concert at the Municipal Theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina by Buddy De Franco, an American jazz clarinetist who has been active since the early 1950’s. The album features orthodox jazz music by Charlie Parker, Antonio Carlos Jobim, 60’s rock and roll numbers, and 30’s screen numbers. But the highlight of the album is the local jazz musicians who participated in this concert. The lineup includes Jorge Navarro (p), Jorge Lopez-Ruiz (b), Osvaldo Lopez (ds), Ricardo Lew (g), and many other important Argentine jazz artists who are well known to those who know them. Unlike their respective solo works, these musicians are only behind the scenes, but their outstanding performance skills can be heard through their renditions of orthodox jazz numbers.

Decades from now, when historians and epidemiologists look back at the Covid era, they’ll probably have a hard time pinpointing the exact moment the pandemic came to an end in America and normal life resumed. Some will probably point to the day in August 2021 when the vaccination rate hit 70 percent, while others will spotlight April 2022, when airlines dropped their mask mandate, or even Joe Biden’s 60 Minutes interview a few months later when he bluntly declared the pandemic over despite protests from members of his own administration. Others still might say that moment is still to come.

From another perspective, though, there’s a strong case to be made that it happened on Feb. 1 at 8:01 p.m. EST, when Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band walked onstage at Tampa, Florida’s Amalie Arena and kicked off their world tour with a thunderous rendition of “No Surrender” in front of 20,000 screaming, maskless fans.

This moment followed six painfully long years of E Street Band inactivity — including multiple tour delays due to Covid concerns — and a torrent of outrage over Springsteen’s decision to dramatically raise ticket prices this time around. “I know it was unpopular with some fans,” Springsteen told Rolling Stone late last year, in his only remarks to date on the controversy. “But if there’s any complaints on the way out, you can have your money back.”

HEP Records presents this 1974 first volume of collected works from American jazz bandleader and bass saxophonist Boyd Raeburn and his Orchestra, entitled On The Air.

Raeburn’s Orchestra, which was active c. 1944-1947, performed arrangements that were often comparable to those used by Woody Herman and the “progressive jazz” of Stan Kenton during the same period. The compositions arranged by George Handy were the most contemporary, utilizing dissonance somewhat in the manner of Igor Stravinsky. Johnny Richards joined in 1947, following Handy and stayed for a year writing 50 compositions.
