Following a pair of recent singles, Imagine Dragons have announced their upcoming album Mercury – Act 1, produced by Rick Rubin.
Ahead of the LP’s September 3rd release, Dan Reynolds and company have shared the new single “Wrecked,” an Imagine Dragons-produced song inspired by the singer’s late sister-in-law Alisha Durtschi Reynolds, who died following a cancer battle.
“She was the brightest light. A beacon of joy and strength for everyone she met. Her sudden passing has shaken me in ways that I still am unable to express,” Reynolds said in a statement. “I was with her and my brother when she passed, and it was the first time in my life that I had witnessed death in this way. It sealed into my mind the fragility of life and finality of this all. I’ve watched my brother face something that no one should have to. But I’ve also seen his faith bring him hope in a future with her. I can only hope for the same.”

The third full-length release for the Las Vegas rock band features production from Alex da Kid, Jayson DeZuzio, John Hill, Joel Little, and Mattman & Robin. “Evolve” involves mostly devolving back into the hoariest of tired rock cliches, and plodding grimly towards the summer’s festivals. This latest effort might represent a small progression, but it’s still far from an evolution.

Closer To Stranger is the new solo album by Pakistani-born dream-folk musician Ilyas Ahmed. Drawing on a wide range of influences, his songs incorporate classic singer-songwriter gestures alongside more experimental leanings. Recorded to tape in the studio by Justin Higgins in the fall of 2016 and finished in the spring of 2017, Ahmed’s instrumental palette includes: acoustic and electric 6 and 12-string guitars, Fender Rhodes, multiple keyboards, tanpura, and percussion. Closer To Stranger stands as a meditation on uneasy identity politics during times of unreason, seeking peace amidst chaos.
Jonathan Sielaff (of Thrill Jockey ambient duo Golden Retriever) cameos with guest saxophone on “Zero For Below” but otherwise the album is a solo affair, alternately feverish, tense, hazed, hypnotic, and narcotic. A slowly unfolding inward journey of late night lullabies and contemplative electric drift.

In his autobiography, Igor Stravinsky wrote of his not having had any ‘great liking’ for the combination of strings and piano. That there nevertheless are a number of chamber works by him featuring the violin is to a large extent due to the violinist Samuel Dushkin. The two were introduced to each other by Stravinsky’s German music publisher who wanted to persuade him to compose a violin concerto. They obviously hit it off: their collaboration continued after the concerto had come into being in 1931, and they devised a recital programme to perform together on tours.

Published in 1733, Pietro Locatelli’s L’Arte del violino for solo violin, strings, and basso continuo took both violin technique and the solo concerto as a genre into a whole new realm. The twelve concertos included in the collection also played a part in forming the image of the violin virtuoso, reaching its full bloom with Paganini towards the end of the century. While the unusually high technical demands of the solo part are obvious to the listener from the start, the great surprise comes at the end of the first and third movements of each of the concertos.

The relationship between Igor Stravinsky and the violin didn’t get off to a promising start: early on in his career the composer stated that he was not fond of stringed instruments, finding them ‘rich in cheap expressivity’. He was also suspicious of virtuoso interpreters – among which violinists were particularly numerous – and their tendency to ‘seek immediate triumphs and to lend themselves to the wishes of the public’. Nevertheless there are in Stravinsky’s oeuvre a number of works featuring a solo violin, all of which have now been recorded by his compatriot Ilya Gringolts.

Throughout his career, Ilya Gringolts has devoted himself to performing contemporary music as well as the great concert repertoire, while also developing a keen interest in historical performance practice. Ilker Arcayürek (born 1984 in Istanbul) is an Austrian operatic tenor of Turkish origin.
Arcayürek came to Vienna as a 5-year-old, where he grew up and became a Mozart singer. He sang in the Arnold Schönberg Choir and took private singing lessons with Sead Buljubasic in Vienna. In 2010 he became a member of the opera studio of Zurich Opera, where he had his debut roles as Ferrando (“Così fan tutte”) and Aljeja (“Aus einem Totenhaus”). In the season 2013/14 he was engaged at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt and sang there among others Italian singer (“Der Rosenkavalier”), Prince (“Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen”), Alfred (“Die Fledermaus”) and Tamino (“Die Zauberflöte”).
From 2015 to 2018, Ilker Arcayürek was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where he appeared as Rodolfo “La Bohème”, Don Ottavio in “Don Giovanni”, Nadir in “Les pêcheurs de Perles”, Andres in “Wozzeck” as well as in the title roles of “Idomeneo” and “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria”.
