After the runaway success of their first album together, released by Odradek World and acclaimed by both the public and the international press (five stars in BBC Magazine, four stars in Songlines Magazine), Koum Tara and La Camerata present Baraaim El-louz – ‘The buds of the almond tree’. The line “Rise and behold the buds of the almond tree” comes from the poem Koum Tara, and it is in this spirit that this album was conceived: an invitation to admire spring, its renewal and its continuity. Renewal, because the group, with its new singer, has come up with original compositions and texts that attempt to open up new horizons for modern chaabi. Continuity, because Koum Tara remains a multi-faceted cultural journey, based on traditional chaabi poetry and melodies, the Western string quartet, jazz and electronic music. This new repertoire, which took shape during the confinement of 2020, further explores the roots of chaabi with traditional melodies and lyrics by Mahboub Bati, Dahmane El Harrachi and Mohamed El Badji, thus honouring some of the great figures of this popular music style. This second opus is also enriched by original compositions and previously unpublished texts, written mainly by the singer Hamidou (Mohamed Hamam) and Karim Maurice.

Without knowing anything about Tiwayo, one could imagine him with an extraordinary family tree: the secret son of Nina Simone and Marvin Gaye and a kissing cousin of the Black Keys or Terence Trent D’Arby. Infused by the classic scope of 60’s and 70’s blues, gospel, soul, rock and reggae, Tiwayo’s voice has been forged by sleepless nights spent singing in subways ’til sunrise and spending hard time on the road in the USA and Europe. Lauded even prior to this, his first album, he has played shows with Curtis Harding, Cody Chesnutt, Patrice and most recently with Norah Jones and Marcus Miller.
In 2017, he provoked fate by contacting the producer that seemed to him to be the ideal choice for his first album. This was Mark Neill (2011 Grammy Awards winner) who was immediately fascinated. Two month later, Tiwayo was stepping off a jet in Atlanta en-route to Neill’s 16-track Soil of the South Studio in the south of the United States.

In March of 2010, XL Recordings released Titus Andronicus’ epic second album THE MONITOR, immediately elevating the upstart New Jersey rock band to legendary status.
In late 2019, loose plans began for a 10th anniversary reissue. In early 2020, those plans were put on indefinite hold, for obvious reasons, and the band, whose chilling vision of America’s tribalist future would become the awful truth, was silenced.
XL new presents the 10th Anniversary Edition of The Monitor. The record has been remastered by Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service, with the original “lost” sequence and side-breaks restored.
Since The Monitor’s release 11 years ago, it’s been celebrated as a classic of this and any other era of rock music, and it’s legacy continues to grow. We’ve been through a lot and this album remains a salve for our times.

Tineidae (Poland) serves us a space ambient album thick with analogue sweeps and evolving walls of sound.
The derelict mothership is massive, its silent shadow swallowing your cutter-ship as you connect with the airlock. Inside, rusted bulkheads sing like whales from deep within as they reverberate with lumbering creaks. Your flashlight flickers in the dark as you wipe the smudge off a wall-mounted map. Better get the power online or you’ll never be able to access the backup logs. NG-section is two floors down. Time for another spacewalk.
Your MD-233 exosuit gets you climbing the ship’s exterior with little effort. Parts of the ship have been blown off, scattered across space from the impact all those years ago, revealing the skeletal remains of the eco-hub and launch pad. Makes you wonder what happened to those left behind without food. The distressed messages coming out of there were censored, but it must have been bad for them to have brought in a black market contracter to wipe them from the mainframe before the repair crew arrives.
Recommended for fans of space journeys, supernovas and arpeggiated swells.

The desert is a place of hardship and subtle beauty, a stark world that reveals its secrets slowly and carefully. For the renowned Saharan band Tinariwen, the desert is their home, their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflecting the complex realities of their homebase in North West Africa. The band is set to release their new album Emmaar on February 11th. For the last five years, Tinariwen have been busy criss-crossing the globe bringing their triumpant tours to all five continents and expanding their audience. During this time their beloved homeland in the Adrar des Ifoghas, a Saharan mountain range that straddles the border between north-eastern Mali and southern Algeria has, in effect, been transformed into a conflict zone, a place where nobody can venture without putting themselves in danger. These conflicts have forced the band into exile to record their 8th album, Elwan. Elwan means ‘the elephants ‘ – an animal metaphor to describe those ‘beasts’, whether militias or multinational consortiums, who have trampled everything in their path: in the desert, where both the human and ecological equilibriums are extremely fragile. Tinariwen chose to record this album is several locations around the world, including for 4 days at the desert hideaway of Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, CA, the studio known as a favored refuge for many an eclectic artist from Queens of the Stone Age to Daniel Lanios to Arctic Monkeys to Iggy Pop and more. For Tinariwen, the geographical location of the studio proved to be particularly propitious in terms of creativity. And the human climate was just as favorable. A few friends dropped in during the sessions to add some magic to a few tracks including, Kurt Vile (electric guitar), Mark Lanegan ( Vocals on ‘Nànnuflày’), Matt Sweeney (electric guitar) and producer/guitarist, Alain Johannes (Cigarbox guitar). Sessions were also recorded in Morocco, where the band were accompanied by local musicians, in a land where they are considered musical legends. Lovers of those sensual yet abrasive riffs that are Tinariwen’s signature won’t be disappointed. But neither will those who love their funky, danceable side, which comes through loud and clear. All that potential has been wonderfully honed by the album’s mixing engineer Andrew Schepps, known well for his work with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Jay Z.
