Jazzrausch Bigband – Mahler’s Breakdown (2023)

Mahler’s Breakdown is the extraordinary arrangement of the band’s chief composer, Leonhard Kuhn, and turns the symphony upside down: 110 years later, Mahler’s departure towards a new musical language is skilfully continued, just as his wish to fill the parts with soloists. In the 50-minute techno version of the ‘Sinfonia Maledetta’, as an Italian copyist expressed it, Jazzrausch Bigband unleashes its instrumental versatility and sheer momentum. Through their energetic improvisations, the 15 musicians take Mahler’s and Kuhn’s music into the here and now. A rave to enjoy listening to, a symphony to dance to.

Irma Curry may not be a familiar name to you, but in the early 1950s she was a star vocalist in Lionel Hampton’s band. In 1962, she recorded a stupendous album for Columbia called Love Is a Necessary Evil.
Irma also recorded several singles with Benny Carter in 1964 and with the Alan Simon Trio in 1985. In between, she performed at clubs in New York and Hollywood, including gigs with Louis Jordan. A few weeks ago, when Fresh Sound’s Jordi Pujol told me he was re-issuing Love Is a Necessary Evil and that Irma was still around, I tracked down a number for her and we spent time on the phone. Irma has the most lyrical phone voice and she is as sweet and as gracious as can be. (All photos of Irma Curry courtesy of Kim, Irma’s daughter.)

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:22:04 minutes | 1,36 GB | Genre: Classical

Maxim Emelyanychev and Il Pomo d’Oro continue their uncommon Mozart symphony cycle. The idea is the following: put together great symphonies of the late Mozart and youth pieces. Maxim Emelyanychev, who has already gathered the first and the last symphonies – the beginning and the end –, has chosen to record the symphony no. 29 and the legendary no. 40 in the present volume. The ensemble makes us follow Mozart, from Salzburg to Vienna, in the yearning for liberty his life was. Perfectly suited to this repertoire, Maxim Emelyanychev uses the exceptional and period-instrumented sonority of Il Pomo d’Oro to deliver a dramatic and powerful Symphony no. 40, while rendering all the lyricism and contrasts of the no. 29. The Oboe concerto, interpreted by the soloist Ivan Podyomov, first oboe at the Royal Concertbouw Orchestra, adds a concertante supplement to this programme.

Heinrich Marschner, the leading German composer of Romantic opera between Weber and Wagner, was a progressive innovator, bringing to his music a new dimension – the supernatural anti-hero enmeshed in horror, such as the protagonist of Der Vampyr (1828). Before his psychological operas, however, Marschner composed a series of overtures and stage works exploring more conventional material. Dario Salvi continues his exploration of Marschner’s overtures and stage music in this second volume featuring a programme of all world premiere recordings. Salvi conducts the Hradec Kralove Philharmonic Orchestra in its first recording on the Naxos label.

“Contemporary Soul Jazz” is probably the best way to describe Elmar Frey’s music. This brand-new septet presents bluesy and melodic compositions played with a lot of verve, underpinned with a rich groove and peppered with cheeky brass arrangements.
Elmar Frey, a sought-after sideman in the jazz scene as a drummer, steps out of the shadows with “Seven Colors” and once again acts as bandleader, composer and arranger. He has expanded his earlier sextet (“News From The Past” 2005), with another horn player, which makes the band sound even fuller and more colourful. An illustrious horn section meets a hard-swingin’ rhythm section.

In this album, originally conceived to mark the composer’s quincentenary in 2021, Cut Circle strives to treat Josquin not as a sleepy relic of the distant past but as a stylish, sensitive, playful, ecstatic composer. We foreground his revolutionary precision and drive while embracing reactions to the music that are visceral and emotional.
