Wanted! The Outlaws is an album by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser, released in RCA Victor in 1976, and consisting of previously released material. Released to capitalize on the new outlaw country movement, Wanted! The Outlaws earned its place in music history by becoming the first country album to sell a million copies. The original liner notes were written by Chet Flippo, a contributor to Rolling Stone, and offer a short introduction and some praise on each artist involved with the project.

Jennings recorded the album at a time when he was completely drug-free; this had not occurred in his career for about twenty years. In April 1984, Jennings rented a house in Arizona for himself, his wife Jessi Colter, and young son Shooter, and quit cocaine cold turkey, although he did not intend to quit for good. Jennings was inspired to remain drug free mainly because of his son. In the audio version of his autobiography Waylon, Jennings recalled that quitting drugs had an immediate effect on his music: “I hit better notes now that I wasn’t plagued with laryngitis. I played on the beat instead of ahead of it. Probably only I noticed that instead of pushing myself, I was being pulled along by my own legend and the skills I’d learned from a lifetime performing.”

“John’s Back in Town” is a comic response to Johnny Cash’s “The Singing Star’s Queen” from Everybody Loves a Nut (1966), with an identical general concept. During this time, Jennings rented an apartment in Nashville with Cash, who later recalled in the Jennings documentary Renegade Outlaw Rebel, “We had a mutual respect for each other as artists, and when we got to know each other we had so much in common: our love for music and, at that time, our love for chemicals.” During the 1970s, RCA Records leased several recordings issued on the RCA Camden label to Pickwick Records; Pickwick reissued this album in 1976 as The Dark Side of Fame, without “It’s All Over Now,” which had been previously recorded by the Rolling Stones. The album also includes the popular Roy Orbison hit “Dream Baby.” Matt Fink of AllMusic: “Though there’s nothing here in particular to get excited about, there’s enough to keep the casual fan interested.”

This was Waylon’s last album for RCA and failed to chart. Unsurprising I guess, as it is far from typical Waylon, but it is absolutely brilliant. A powerful reflective album, not so rollicking and countryfied as most of Waylon’s stuff, maybe a bit more back to ‘I’ve always been crazy’ days. It may not be to the taste of a proper yee-ha country fan, but I found it absolutely compelling to the point that I am now looking to replace my copy which has a faint scratch too much for my fancy new deck to tolerate. Stand out tracks Me And Them Brothers Of Mine, and Sweet Mother Texas, with spare orchestration and a slow burn, allowing that fantastic voice to blow you away and raise the hairs on the back of your neck. One of the best albums ever, in any genre, in my book, I think above all because it gives the power of Waylon’s voice full play. But maybe that’s just me….

Never Could Toe the Mark was released at a pivotal time for Jennings, who was trying to get sober after over twenty years of drug abuse, beginning with amphetamines in the late 1960s and early 1970s and cocaine into the mid-1980s. In the audio version of his autobiography Waylon, he recalled that he was in such bad physical shape that he decided to take off April 1984 so he could clean up and get his health back, although he still intended to use: “I told Jessi [Colter, Waylon’s wife] I’d always be a drug addict and I’d always do cocaine, and that this was just temporary, to slow it down.” Jennings rented a house in Arizona and went cold turkey, and it was largely because of his young son Shooter that he decided to quit drugs for good.

Recorded and issued in 1966, Nashville Rebel is the soundtrack to a budget film of the same name by Jay Sheridan — who also wrote most of the songs on side two. While the title of the album may be prophetic in terms of the radical changes in Waylon Jennings’ career around 1971, the music found here is anything but. While Jennings brought seven of the 12 songs to these sessions, and starred in the film, the soundtrack feels and sounds dated and overwrought — mostly from a production point of view. However, it’s also true that some of the material here is less than stellar. Noteworthy tracks include “Nashville Rebel” and “Green River” by Harlan Howard, as well as an interesting if flawed cover of the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.” This is Jennings trying to punch a hole in the sky, but he falls short by trying too hard. The songs here do nothing to advance the narrative of the film and, while interesting, don’t really stand on their own. Sheridan’s cuts, which close the album, are nothing short of embarrassing. ~ Thom Jurek

Leavin’ Town is Waylon Jennings’ second album for RCA Victor, released in 1966. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard country albums chart. Much like his debut album (also released in 1966), Leavin’ Town features a more tempered vocal approach from Jennings and the countrypolitan production that was typical at RCA at the time. In his 2013 book Outlaws: Waylon, Willie, Kris, and the Renegades of Nashville, author Michael Striessguth notes, “One of the early hit singles, ‘Anita, You’re Dreaming,’ co-written by Waylon and [Don] Bowman, found Waylon in a serious and cautious vocal mode that remembered Jim Reeves, only this time with a trace of Marty Robbins, whose famous Latin sound rose up on Waylon’s albums more than a few times in the 1960s.” In the authorized Jennings video biography Renegade Outlaw Legend, producer Chet Atkins recalled, “I was just trying to make a record that would sell that the disc jockeys would play. I never thought, ‘Let’s make a pop record’ or “Let’s make a folk record.’ I didn’t think too much in that direction.” The LP contains three songs composed by Jennings as well as contributions from Bobby Bare, Mel Tillis, Harlan Howard, and Gordon Lightfoot. The LP’s most successful single would be the Lightfoot composition “(That’s What You Get) For Lovin’ Me,” which rose to #9.

Just to Satisfy You was Jennings tenth release on RCA with Chet Atkins producing. The album contains the Top 5 hit duet “I Got You,” which Jennings recorded with Anita Carter. The title track was written with Don Bowman in 1963. The same year, Jennings signed a recording contract with A&M records but his releases had little success, because the main releases of the label were folk music rather than country.[1] However, the single “Just To Satisfy You” backed with Ian Tyson’s “Four Strong Winds” were radio hits in Phoenix, Arizona. Singer Bobby Bare, who liked Jennings’ style, covered both songs and recommended Jennings to Atkins, who signed him to RCA Victor in 1965.[1] In a 1967 interview, Jennings remarked that the song was a “pretty good example” of the influence of his work with Buddy Holly and rockabilly music.[2] Despite that the song was included in Jennings performing repertoire,[1] it was not released as a single in 1969. In the authorized documentary Renegade Outlaw Legend, Jennings recalls, “We wrote ‘Just to Satisfy You,’ and I almost didn’t even try to record that, ’cause I didn’t think it was any good at all. But that song has really lived down through the ages, you might say.” The song has been covered by Glen Campbell and Jennings and Willie Nelson would score a hit with the song as a duet in 1982.

Jennings, who had been a mainstay on at the top of the country charts for most of the previous decade, began a commercial slide with It’s Only Rock & Roll. The LP, which Jennings produced with Randy Scruggs, did produce a number 1 hit: a cover of Little Richard’s rock and roll classic “Lucille (You Won’t Do Your Daddy’s Will),” his twelfth number 1 since 1974. Jennings would not top the singles chart again until 1987. The single “Breakin’ Down” also made the Top 10. Jennings contributed two songs for the LP: “Let Her Do the Walking,” which he wrote himself, and the reflective “No Middle Ground,” which he composed with Gary Scruggs. Songwriter Rodney Crowell, who had written Jennings’ number 1 song “I Ain’t Living Long Like This” and had become one of the singer’s favorite writers, has two songwriting credits, including the title track and the ballad “Angel Eyes”. Jennings’ wife Jessi Colter, Marcia Beverly, and Jerry Gropp provide harmony vocals on the LP.

Sticking to totally musical criteria, the best tracks on this collection are so good that dismissing the gunky ones is easy. There are other criteria for rating a Waylon Jennings album but, however one looks at it, Hangin’ On is one of this country artist’s very special productions. Some might see distinction in the fact that the brief liner notes are written by none other than the wonderful singer Skeeter Davis. Others may treasure this particular album because it really looks like ol’ Waylon is lighting up a joint on the front cover. Then, there is the ultimate criterion for judging the value of an album not only by Jennings, but by some of his associates such as Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, and Willie Nelson, at least in the eyes of a used record store buyer from North Carolina: “If they’s wearin’ beards, I don’t want it. If they’s shaven, then ah’m interested.” While many publications use some sort of star system for rating records, it appears a system based on lack of beards is really the key with some types of country music. In this case, the clean-shaven Jennings was still a few years from the rumbling of heavily rock-influenced music that he would create in the ’70s, but had already been pushing at country music’s perceived boundaries since the middle of the decade. Considering that his groups featuring two drummers would eventually play as loud as the Rolling Stones, the fact that an acoustic dobro can practically drown out the whole band here is a pretty good indication of how relatively soft, even pretty, the music on this album is. But closer listening reveals that the dobro is being turned up really loud for certain effects, just one of many intricate touches that make certain cuts on this record absolute marvels of country music. The premier track is “I Fall in Love So Easy,” which weaves together three completely different sections — and these sections are varied in tempo, in how they are mixed, and in the feeling with which they are played. Subtle use is made of brass, sometimes in written passages in combination with harmonica. There was a lot of work put into this, producing the kind of good feeling one gets from a fine chamber group when it is really playing well. There are also a couple of tracks that clunk, one of which might be the Roy Orbison cover, no matter how well it is sung. This type of submissive personality is not the best character for Jennings to act out in a song. He does much better with the threatening slob who sings “Woman, Don’t You Ever Laugh at Me” or, even better, the depressed psycho who destroyed himself over unrequited love for “Julie.” A check of the songwriting credits reveals, to no surprise, that it is Jennings who wrote the latter ballad. It is one of his best originals. Those who find the John Hartford song “Gentle on My Mind” heavy trodding will need to soak their feet after listening to this album; if a cover version of the song isn’t bad enough, a few minutes later a cheap imitation with similar minor chords burps up. Jennings’ backup band, the Waylors, actually plays on a few tracks here, a hard-fought compromise with RCA producer Chet Atkins, who wanted his own session crew to provide backup. There are no further musical credits, and no information about who thought up the wonderful parts of this album. Call it a brilliant collaboration of Jennings and Atkins at the dawn of a new era in country music. ~ Eugene Chadbourne

The country and western and folk music paths come together here as if they were two mountain trails meeting at a truly wonderful vista. This is years before Jennings introduced thudding double bass drums, heavy electric guitars, the thick scraggly beard, and the dark leather cowboy hat. Here he just looks like a well dressed dude who might break your nose in a bar. In the world of used record store buyers who ask for “no beards” on their Waylon, Merle, or Willie, this here is the jackpot. Jennings comes across as an undersung interpreter of Bob Dylan; this is a “Don’t Think Twice” one can really take seriously, while the “I Don’t Believe You,” with its soulful dobro picking and swishing Jerry Lee Lewis-style piano, is one of the best covers ever of a songwriter whose work has been recorded extensively. There’s more. Jennings pulls off a fine rendition of “House of the Rising Sun” and is arrogant enough to call his arrangement “The Real Rising Sun.” A trio of terrific country tunes are there for the old fans, and things only falter with some banal cover versions on side two. Herb Alpert co-produced, and one wonders if he is blowing the trumpet on the version of Ian Tyson’s “Four Strong Winds.” – Eugene Chadbourne

1964 – A large recording room in the “AUDIO RECORDERS” studio in Phoenix, Arizona. The sound engineer FLOYD RAMSEY sets up a selection of ribbon microphones (RCA 44 / RCA KU-3a) for a recording session with WAYLON JENNINGS. The producer is HERB ALPERT.

Waylon Jennings stands in front of his band and a choir. Within a few hours they create a 4-track recording typical for this era. From todays perspective the sound equipment is very rudimentary, but the result is extremely convincing and clean tube sound. The quality of these recordings is exemplary.
