Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen views “Being There” as the third instalment of a trilogy that began with “Changing Places” (recorded 2001 and 2002) and continued with “The Ground” (recorded 2004). On “Being There” the music’s priorities are maintained. The album’s title is borrowed from a tune on “The Ground”, intentionally stressing the continuity of the music, and also underlining its working concept, characterized by Gustavsen as “being acutely present, aware and focused in the fullness of the moment. The group has a definite direction or sound, but there are still many nuances to explore.”

Of the Norwegian artists that ECM has introduced over the years, pianist Tord Gustavsen must count as one of the least “Nordic” in musical temperament. If the contemplative component of his music and its quietude still reflect Scandinavian priorities, the manner in which he has sought and located connections to early jazz – especially the blues, gospel music, and the nexus of Caribbean music and New Orleans jazz – is entirely his own.

Fifteen years on from Changing Places, his first album for the label ECM, Tord Gustavsen is once again offering up an album performed with a trio, which seems to be the line-up most in keeping with his jarrettian tendencies. He ties together these apparently disparate themes with lyricism, and with a groove that’s all his own. What makes The Other Side even more thrilling is the perfect unison between the players. –  Clotilde Maréchal

On the album Opening, Tord Gustavsen opens a new angle on his unique trio explorations with Scandinavian folk songs, gospel, choral and jazz, introducing a new voice on bass.

With a new companion on board and the recording premiering at Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano, the trio is inspiringly discovering new ways to interact with each other using innovative approaches to sound and technique. The group’s conversations, equal parts complexly structured improvisations and unobtrusively melodic interjections, bring a tantalizing unfamiliarity to the language the Norwegian pianist has developed over nearly two decades of collaboration with ECM.
