With her latest recording, Origami, pianist Louise Bessette unveils a few pages from the musical journal of Montréal composer Anthony Rozankovic. His “origami music” or “score sculptures” are alternately dissonant, syncopated, consonant, lyrical, or chaotic, according to film producer Carl Leblanc, author of the album’s liner notes.

11 of the 16 sixteen pieces on Origami started out as film music, with the composer conveying intense emotions — from the fate of migrants (Errance) to a greeting card in the form of a paper bouquet at Auschwitz (Origami). Among the other works are four concert pieces including Mosaïque thérianthropique and La Jungle jongle, composed for Louise Bessette.

To celebrate the 80th birthday of one of Quebec’s most renowned living composers, pianist Louise Bessette presents Hommage à François Dompierre, which features music written for the cinema, a few unpublished works, and pieces for two pianos featuring the composer himself. Of special note is “Entre mer et chanterelles”, composed for Louise Bessette as a tribute to the composer Gilles Tremblay, and “Un bonheur d’occasion”, an unusual duet with Dompierre, who improvises on his own score performed by Bessette.

Dompierre’s music encompasses an array of styles and genres, from classical to jazz to film soundtracks, and Bessette’s tribute album is bound to appeal to a wide range of music lovers.

Wim Statius Muller, who came to be known as “the Chopin of Curaçao,” spent just over thirty years in various security and counter-espionage organizations! Although for the most part Wim Statius Muller’s music is based on folk dance rhythms, it is nevertheless garbed in the fine attire of concert music, with the waltzes and other dance tunes. The extraordinary musician Louise Bessette offers on this new album all 22 pieces from the Antillean Dances collection and gives these dances the “royal treatment”, offering precise and exceptionally clear performances.
