Ella and Louis Again is a 1957 studio album by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. It is the “sequel” to their 1956 album, Ella and Louis, in contrast to their previous collaboration Ella and Louis, this album does not only feature duets. Mono recordings.

Stylistically, singer Fitzgerald and trumpeter/singer Armstrong had very different histories; he started out in Dixieland before branching out into classic jazz and swing, whereas Fitzgerald started out as a swing-oriented big-band vocalist before becoming an expert bebopper. But the two of them have no problem finding common ground on Ella and Louis Again, which is primarily a collection of vocal duets (with the backing of a solid rhythm section led by pianist Oscar Peterson). One could nit-pick about the fact that Satchmo doesn’t take more trumpet solos, but the artists have such a strong rapport as vocalists that the trumpet shortage is only a minor point.

I purchased this from ebay quiet a few weeks ago so it has been well played.
It opens with probably the best version of ‘Summer Time’ I have heard. Superb orchestration with Louis trumpet sets the scene and then Ella’s stunning vocals just blow you away. PLAY IT LOUD!. The sound is just fantastic.
There is a bit more than usual information about the technicals – The source 32bit/ 192Khz, the mastering equipment, even the cable and preamp. So TopMusic are obviously very proud of what and how they have acheived.
There are in total 16 tracks, seven of which also appear on the superb Verve mono JSACD Ella & Louis. So how do they compare? Verve wins. The voices are just that bit clearer as is the instrumentation hence the 4.5 stars.
But apart from that would I have bought it had I known? Yes. It is still a superb album. A must for Ella and Louis fans.

It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single, which topped the pop charts in the United Kingdom, though it performed poorly in the United States because Larry Newton, the president of ABC Records, disliked the song and refused to promote it.

Louis made many divine recordings, but this 1958 LP was the only one specifically devoted to spiritual songs. At times joyous, solemn, whimsical and moving, this uplifting classic includes Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; Go Down, Moses; Didn’t It Rain; Down by the Riverside , and more-plus eight bonus tracks including his celebrated Elder Eatmore mock sermons!

Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington were (and are) two of the main stems of jazz. Any way you look at it, just about everything that’s ever happened in this music leads directly — or indirectly — back to them. Both men were born on the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries, and each became established as a leader during the middle ’20s. Although their paths had crossed from time to time over the years, nobody in the entertainment industry had ever managed to get Armstrong and Ellington into a recording studio to make an album together. On April 3, 1961, producer Bob Thiele achieved what should be regarded as one of his greatest accomplishments; he organized and supervised a seven-and-a-half-hour session at RCA Victor’s Studio One on East 24th Street in Manhattan, using a sextet combining Duke Ellington with Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars. This group included ex-Ellington clarinetist Barney Bigard, ex-Jimmie Lunceford swing-to-bop trombonist Trummy Young, bassist Mort Herbert, and drummer Danny Barcelona. A second session took place during the afternoon of the following day. The music resulting from Thiele’s inspired experiment is outstanding and utterly essential. That means everybody ought to hear this album at least once, and many will want to hear it again and again all the way through, for this is one of the most intriguing confluences in all of recorded jazz. Armstrong blew his horn with authority and sang beautifully and robustly. “Azalea” is a harmonically pixilated melody with complicated, peculiarly rhymed lyrics composed by Duke many years earlier with Armstrong in mind. Other highlights include the bluesy “I’m Just a Lucky So and So,” a smoking hot, scat-laden rendition of “Cotton Tail,” and “The Beautiful American,” a marvelously modern exercise composed on the spot by Ellington that leaves one with the curious impression that Armstrong has just finished sitting in with Charles Mingus. It’s also a premonition of the Ellington/Mingus/Roach Money Jungle session that would take place the following year. Since Thiele had “borrowed” Ellington from Columbia without permission, Roulette compensated by “lending” Count Basie & His Orchestra for the big-band blowout album entitled First Time! The Count Meets the Duke. The Armstrong/Ellington master takes were originally issued on two long-playing records; Together for the First Time came out on Roulette in 1961 and The Great Reunion appeared in 1963. Both albums later resurfaced as a Roulette LP two-fer entitled The Duke Ellington/Louis Armstrong Years. (more…)

Two of the most influential and popular voices in modern music, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong form a jazz dream team on Ella and Louis. A once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece, their distinctive vocals meld seamlessly together along with Armstrong’s exceptional trumpet playing and the first-rate accompaniment of pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Buddy Rich. This recording has become the touchstone and template for jazz vocal duets.

“There isn’t much one can say about an album whose title is Ella And Louis Again. The “again” obviously means they’ve already done one album together and beyond that, what can you say about two people like Ella and Louis? I doubt that there’s anyone today who loves music, who doesn’t know Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. About all that can be pointed out, I suppose, is that we’ve again selected some of the best product of some of the best songwriters of our age. The backing, with the Oscar Peterson Trio and Louis Bellson substituting for Buddy Rich, remains, as in the first album, quiet, discreet, swinging.” – Norman Granz from the original liner notes (more…)

The Dukes of Dixieland is a New Orleans “Dixieland”-style revival band, originally formed in 1948 by brothers Frank Assunto, trumpet; Fred Assunto, trombone; and their father Papa Jac Assunto, trombone and banjo. Their first records featured Jack Maheu, clarinet; Stanley Mendelsohn, piano; Tommy Rundell, drums; and Barney Mallon, tuba and string bass. During its run the band also featured musicians such as jazz great clarinetist Pete Fountain, Jerry Fuller, Jim Hall, Herb Ellis, and Bob “Duke” Assunto [son].
Fred and Frank Assunto both died young, and the original Dukes of Dixieland disbanded in the early 1970s. In April 1974, Producer/Manager John Shoup restarted the DUKES of Dixieland with Connie Jones as leader, leased Louis Prima’s nightclub atop the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter and renamed it “DUKE’S PLACE.” The DUKES of Dixieland have not been affiliated with the Assunto Family since 1974, some 37 years ago.
