Past Inside The Present is pleased to announce ‘Wave Variations’ which is a new mini-album by veteran ambient producer Dennis Huddleston AKA 36.

36 has often enjoyed exploring self-imposed restrictions, as it forces him to be creative, while allowing an inherently coherent sound between the different compositions. All the arrangements on Wave Variations use a limited pallete of mostly synth-based sounds, with particular focus on keys and melodies. Each track directly influenced the next one.

Loops have always been at the very center of everything I’ve ever made. They are the beginning and the end of my music. I’m obsessed with the idea of creating something you can play for 60 seconds or 60 minutes, where the listener enters that hypnotic flow state, where you become detached from time and space.

While compositionally, these are perfect loops, it’s worth noting that the production chain naturally created so called imperfections, which will sometimes become audible. These could be simple wow/flutter artifacts from tape, or slight changes in dynamics from the compressor. Maybe nothing actually changes at all and it’s simply your ears discovering new sounds within the loop?

To be very clear, these are absolutely not unfinished ideas, sketches, nor are they the foundation for anything more than what they already are. They exist purely on their own terms, within their own space. Feel free to get lost in them whenever you need them.

I wrote ‘Colours In The Dark’ after an extended period of complete musical inactivity. Earlier in the year, I suffered with depression for the first time in my life, which really shook me. I’ve always battled with anxiety, but this was on a whole different level. The lights just completely went out and nothing seemed to matter. Days were spent existing rather than something to look forward to. I lost all desire to work on music, which only exacerbated things further. It’s a terrible feeling and not really something you can truly understand unless you are cursed to experience it for yourself. I don’t usually share such things publicly, but I realise that many other people are suffering in silence right now and taking that first step to acknowledge you may need help is perhaps the hardest part. It certainly gave me a higher perspective on things, especially among the backdrop of what has been an awful year for the world as a whole. My troubles were tiny in comparison, but when you’re battling with your mental health, your worldview shrinks to the macro level and nothing else seems to matter.

“I often do alternative takes of my tracks, mostly for personal exploration rather than a desire to release them publicly. Often by manipulating simple things like pitch, tempo or delay, I discover new harmonies, melodies or sounds, which breathe new life into music I’ve previously spent days and weeks working on.

With this release, I took the techniques I have been developing since 2010 and used them to make these really lush ambient/drone versions of the the entire Sine Dust EP. Mostly keeping the original song structures intact, sounds have been stretched, reversed, pitched up, pitched down, doused in reverb, saturated/compressed, and floating in tape hiss, creating gaseous, long-form interpretations of the original tunes.
