“Moment to Moment comes close to the supernatural nature of music…Heavy with the bronzed glow of [Nick Phillips’] horn and the dense beauty of [Cava] Menzies’ sinewy harmonics informed by a palette of spectacular colours, the music gathers like a great bank of gorgeously fluffy and rippling cumulonimbus clouds sheltering in an endless sky.”
—Jazz da Gama

“…entrancing…The music is quiet but never light; it’s filled with emotion and with harmonic interest, but its overall impact is soothing and comforting at a deeply visceral level. It’s hard to explain how exceptionally beautiful this album is. Strongly recommended to all jazz collections.”
—CD HotList

” …Phillips and Menzies let the music breathe, contrasting every sound they make with silence, showing that they are both masters of restraint…[they] play so well during their quartet set with bassist Jeff Chambers and drummer Jaz Sawyer that it is surprising to realize that neither one is a fulltime musician “
—Jazz Inside Magazine

“…floating, gorgeous album of ballads.”

Phil Woods with Strings – The Thrill Is Gone (2003) [Japan 2014] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Phil Woods with Strings – The Thrill Is Gone (2003) [Japan 2014]

“Phil Woods with Strings?” you may ask with a bit of apprehension. An album with strings, which is inevitably heavily arranged, is always a risky proposition for a jazz musician whose art depends above all on spontaneous improvisation. But Phil Woods, arguably the best alto sax player alive today, has done it many times in his 55-year career. What distinguishes this album is the core group: Wood’s regular quartet featuring the young and brilliant pianist Bill Charlap. Also, they decided to go with a string quintet (two violins, two violas and one cello) instead of a larger string section. This probably worked to make the ensemble agile and more spontaneous. The first violinist even takes a few solos! Seven standard gems are sandwiched by two original compositions by Woods: “And When We’re Young” and “Solitude,” the latter of which is not to be confused with the more famous Duke Ellington tune. Frequent collaborator Bryin Lynch does not play his horn here but contributed a few arrangements. All in all, this is a charming album filled with many tender moments and nice sound. Woods’ playing is inspired and varied arrangements keep the program interesting. Bill Charlap helps his boss with a few beautiful solos as well.

Steven Bernstein first saw the late, great New Orleans pianist Henry Butler play in 1984. “He was genius-level brilliant, man,” he says, still marveling. “I couldn’t believe there was a guy who could sound like the most ancient music and the most futuristic music at the same time.” Fourteen years later, Bernstein took Hal Willner’s recommendation and hired Butler to play in the touring band that played the score for Robert Altman’s film Kansas City. In 2013, the two musicians formed the Hot 9, the name a tip of the fedora to Louis Armstrong’s landmark Hot Five and Hot Seven sessions of the 1920s. They released the acclaimed Viper’s Drag album the following year, and toured until Butler’s untimely passing in 2018.

That Coleman Hawkins jumped on the jazz/bossa nova bandwagon craze initiated by Stan Getz in 1962 was a bit of a surprise to his fans, but that he was comfortable in the idiom should not be off-putting. Able to adapt to any style over his lengthy career, the legendary tenor saxophonist chose classic standards adapted to Brazilian rhythms, music from masters like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, and a Manny Albam original. Producer Bob Thiele and music director Albam were strong in their resolve directing Hawkins to do this project, and the results are fairly predictable, especially considering that every single track is played in midtempo. The difference is the deployment of two guitarists in Barry Galbraith (lead) and Howard Collins (rhythm) split into separate stereo channels, with bassist Major Holley and no full kit drummer, although Eddie Locke with a minimal and stripped-down setup, Willie Rodriguez, and even Tommy Flanagan play small Latin percussion instruments.
