With Who Are You Now, Madison Cunningham traces her own path from SoCal teenager to independent adult, setting that paradigm-shifting transition to a soundtrack of honest, heartfelt music. It’s a revised spin on the singer-songwriter format, as well as a jolt of electric energy in a genre often ruled by acoustic instruments. Thanks to Cunningham s autobiographical wiring. Who Are You Now also answers the question posed by the album’s title. Introducing a young musician who’s learned to balance the fresh with the familiar.

At 21, pop singer and TikTok star Madison Beer has spent an uncomfortable amount of her career navigating mini “scandals”—accusations that she copied Ariana Grande, that she lied about plastic surgery, that she romanticized Lolita. Beer signed to Island when she was 13, shortly after Justin Bieber tweeted one of her many YouTube covers, Etta James’ “At Last”; three years later, she split from the label, saying she felt “trapped” by the “Disney queen” image thrust upon her. The internet deals in absolutes, particularly for young women: She’s either fake or so raw it’s empowering; she’s rebelling against the patriarchy or bowing to it; she’s subversive or she’s derivative. Beer’s debut album is muddier. Life Support is rooted in authenticity but still layered in artifice, molded in the conventions of pop’s more unconventional players.

Don’t be fooled by the album cover: the music recorded here is NOT Maderna, but Frescobaldi, Gabrieli and a few other composers from the same era, only orchestrated by Maderna. Among these late Renaissance and baroque works, as re-written, can be found, as a kind of pillar whose meaning in the album rather defies comprehension, theSequenza XII by Berio which was initially conceived for a guitar solo and transcribed by the composer for guitar and chamber orchestra under the name of Chemins V. The whole work is about orchestrations, re-editions, translations from other eras. When it comes to Maderna and other old composers, the interest is neither musicological nor historical, as the orchestrations were done in the 20th Century, with 20th-Century orchestral techniques. Maderna’s work, dating from the 1950s to the 1970s, bears witness to the widespread interest in masters from the past, with new editions, exhumations, rediscoveries; and Monteverdi was played without overmuch concern for period instruments – even if Hindemith, for example, tried to perform L’Orfeo with what old instruments he was able to gather… Seen from this point of view, the Maderna orchestrations are almost recompositions, although without ever betraying or travestying the manuscript, as Stravinsky did with Pergolese: it sticks, for example, to a “baroque” orchestra from our times, without instruments which did not exist at the time. A truly interesting recording.

Following her dreamy, artfully textured debut, 2017’s Night Night at the First Landing, by about a year, Perfect Shapes finds a more explorative Madeline Kenney, both stylistically and timbrally. Venturing into bolder indie electronica and time-shifting experimental rock, the album was produced by Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner and features more prominent synths and electronics. Both women played multiple instruments on the record. While no track is representative of the whole album, opener “Overhead” (the one song here produced by Ben Sloan rather than Wasner) establishes its contrasting timbres and mix of lyricism and atmosphere. Clanging, industrial percussion is combined with muted drums, spacy synths are joined by rumbling guitar tones, and twinkling keyboards and guitar float over a distinct, funky bass on a song that wonders “So now what’s the light I’m living in?/No sound, just the colors coming in.” The quirkier, more syncopated “Cut Me Off” seems descended from Talking Heads, while the drifting “I Went Home” offers borderline jammy rock. Elsewhere, the playful, surprising “The Flavor of the Fruit Tree” borrows from woozy alt-R&B, bleepy synth pop, and stylized vocal-era pop. With the exception of Kenney’s consistently breezy, warm vocals, altogether, the album comes off as unpredictable as that sounds, especially compared to her relatively intimate debut. However, for those who aren’t put off by its favoring crafted texture and melody over mood or structure, it’s also absorbing, offering layers to uncover with repeat listens. Trivia of note: Perfect Shapes is Wasner’s first time producing music that isn’t her own. – Marcy Donelson
