“The Key”, the debut album of Mauritius-born pianist Jerry Léonide, now living in France, is the key to a whole world. To the music and the attitude to life of an island paradise. Léonide translates the irresistibly springy and danceable, clearly African-influenced grooves and airy, light, clear melodies of his homeland into the vocabulary of jazz. His world-spanning piano playing also delighted the jury of the “Solo Piano Competition 2013” of the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival and earned Léonide first prize in the competition.
At the age of 17 Léonide left his home country and moved to Paris. The possibilities of musical education were decisive. Linley Marthe, an old friend from Mauritius and highly sought-after bassist by artists such as Joe Zawinul or Nguyên Lê, opened the first doors to the local jazz scene for him. Léonide quickly gained a foothold in a highly creative, cosmopolitan, multinational environment, which is characteristic of French jazz and which is today performed by international stars such as the South Korean singer Youn Sun Nah, the Vietnamese-born Guitarist Nguyên Lê, the Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan or the trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, who comes from Lebanon.
With “The Key”, Léonide sets out to join this current in which the creative approach of artists to the musical language of their countries of origin plays a central role. “The rhythms and melodies from Mauritius are part of my musical DNA. From them I draw my Ideas and I am sure that the originality of my music comes from them. At the same time, I have always been open to jazz, classical music and the most diverse traditional music “The Key” now opens the door to a very own, new musical world for a wide audience.
