“Two worlds become one: Classical and jazz blend with a beautiful blow.” Magne Thormodsæter is an ECM-alumni, bassist, and in- demand session musician. On L’arte della persuasione, he fuses two worlds with the full force of a beautiful blow. A 35- minute story told in five acts, it pits a high-caliber classical ensemble against a jazz group. The result is captivatingly unclassifiable.
Although Thormodsæter fully composed L’arte della persuasione, the score also provides the musicians with permissions to act spontaneously. The work will thus never sound the exact same way twice. This inner tension was amplified by the process: All musicians only saw the piece on the day of recording.
“I honestly didn’t know what would happen,” Thormodsæter admits, but the result ended up sounding entirely organic. Gradually, the players turned into creators themselves – making the piece “their own.”

The St. Louis Symphony and their music director Stéphane Denève present a wonderful program featuring two of the most accomplished American composers in history: Leonard Bernstein with his Serenade and John Williams with his Concerto for violin and orchestra, both performed by star James Ehnes, one of the most exceptional North American violinists. John Williams himself was present at the recording of his violin concerto, working together with the St. Louis Symphony, Denève, and Ehnes. Both works evolve around love: Bernstein’s Serenade was inspired by musings on love from Plato’s Symposium while Williams’s work was arguably inspired and eventually dedicated to his suddenly deceased wife. By combining these two concert pieces, this album puts the symphonic work of Bernstein and Williams at the center, two composers who weren’t afraid of crossing the boundaries between film music and “serious” classical genres at a time when these worlds were generally kept far apart. Especially in Williams’ concerto, there are still hints of his work as a film composer; the slow movement brings to mind a scene of emotional gravity.
Widely considered one of the world’s finest orchestras, the SLSO maintains its commitment to artistic excellence, educational impact, and community connections. The St. Louis Symphony, Stéphane Denève, and James Ehnes all make their Pentatone debut.

Iida Antola’s debut album “The truth about love”, with Kirill Kozlovski on piano. The program consists of three song cycles composed during the Second World War: “Cabaret Songs” (1937-39) by Benjamin Britten, “5 Love Songs after Ricarda Huch” (1939) by Viktor Ullmann and “Chants de terre et de ciel” (1938) by Olivier Messiaen. The lives of all three composers were severely affected by the war: Britten was forced to spend most of the war in America and after returning to England applied for conscientious objector status to avoid conscription; Messiaen was drafted into the medical corps of the French army and spent a year in a Nazi prison camp; and Ullmann, with a Jewish background, was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp was exterminated in Auschwitz in 1942. Although the suppression of the war is palpable in these three song cycles, they are true ambassadors of love and hope. Despite the turbulent time in which these cycles were written, the common thread in all three is the love that gives the publication its name: “The Truth about Love”.

The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam embarks on a traversal of three String Quartets by Tchaikovsky. This is the first of two volumes containing String Quartet’s 1 & 2.
The circles in which Tchaikovsky and Brahms lived have a lot in common; it feels like a logical step in their artistic evolution. Even more so than Brahms, however, Tchaikovsky is also public property: in addition to the innumerable amount of recordings and performances of Eugene Onegin, the First Piano Concerto and the Andante Cantabile, the appropriations of ‘The Brand of Tchaikovsky’ pour over one another.
Writer, lawyer and philosopher Maxim Februari writes an essay at the request of the Dudoks, exploring how one could relate to Tchaikovsky in the 21st century. Quoting from Everything changes and Tchaikovsky changes along with it: ‘Like the audience later in the concert hall, the quartet has to reconcile these temporalities and eternities, give gravity to lightness and bring lightness to gravity. And all that preferably without being too pretentious. That’s quite a task.’

With “Arias in Blue”, the Bastian Walcher Quartet, together with soprano Cathrin Lange, presents an album that transcends the boundaries of musical genres. The spectrum ranges from original compositions in the style of the 1930s to new arrangements of well-known baroque arias by Bach, Rachmaninoff and Handel, paired with an electro-chill sound.
A standout track on the album is “Erbarme dich”, one of the most famous arias from Johann Sebastian Bach’s “St Matthew Passion” from 1727. This piece of music represents a high point both within the Passion and in Bach’s entire oeuvre and expresses a deep spiritual and emotional dimension, while the text expresses the plea for mercy and compassion. In the jazz version by the Bastian Walcher Quartet, the aria, which was originally composed for alto voice, is sung by soprano Cathrin Lange. The trumpet takes on the comforting counterpart in place of the oboe.
